Do You Have These Essential Koi Supplies For Your Koi Pond?

A Koi pond can be a beautiful addition to your backyard, but it does require a little background knowledge and some important Koi supplies.

A good way to keep the water in your pond oxygenated is through the use of a fountain or waterfall. Not only will they help oxygenate the water but they will also help drown out any undesirable ambient noises, such as street noise.

Your pond will also require a filter to balance the water chemistry. The pond filter will remove harmful pollutants left by the surrounding environment and fish waste. In addition, a pump will be needed to keep water moving in and out of the filter. Keep in mind that neither a waterfall nor fountain will ever replace a pump because they are not strong enough to assist the filter.

There are some Koi pond supplies that are used less frequently but should be kept on-hand for future use. These supplies consist of de-chlorinator, pond salt , baking soda, and a water testing kit. If tap water is being used to fill the pond you will need to use the de-chlorinator to remove the chlorine that is present in tap water. The water testing kit will be needed to help monitor important chemical levels such as nitrates, nitrites and pH. Baking soda and pond salt can be used to regulate chemical levels if they are slightly off balance.

Koi fish can be preyed upon by birds of prey and land animals that live nearby. A deeper pond that is positioned under an overhanging tree can help prevent birds from attacking your Koi. If these precautionary steps do not work or are not available then you can use nets that are designed to stretch over the pond . These nets will also help to keep debris from falling into your pond.

Finally, the right Koi food is very important to help maintain good health for your Koi fish. Pellet food is designed to meet the nutritional needs of your Koi and should be their primary source of food. The pellet food can be supplemented by fruits and vegetables.

Answer by Carrie S
You will have to clean your pond. Cleaning ponds is probably the task that pond owners dread the most, but it is also the most necessary task to keep your pond in its healthiest state. When cleaning ponds, you can do a periodic cleaning of skimming out the debris, but you also need to do a thorough cleaning once a year. This requires a very physical scrubbing of the entire pond. By following the tips suggested here, the process of cleaning ponds will become a little bit easier.

It is best to do your annual cleaning either in the spring or the fall to get the most out of your pond. It is too cold to clean during the winter, and in the summer, your plants and fish should be at their most vibrant and natural best. You don’t want to disturb this equilibrium by cleaning the pond at that time.

When cleaning ponds, you need to remove the fish and plants. To remove the fish and do as little harm as possible to them, take a large container such as a child’s swimming pool or a large, plastic storage container and fill with half pond water and half clean water. Make sure that you add a de-chlorinating tablet to the water. Using a net, catch the fish and gently place them in their new container in a shady spot.

Next, you will want to drain as much water as possible from the pond. Then scrape out the mud and debris that has attached itself to the walls of the pond. The silt and debris from the pond can be placed directly into your garden as it makes a very good fertilizer. Next, you will want to use a scrub brush or sponge to get off the rest of the algae and other materials that cling to the walls. Detergents are not recommended as they might contain toxins that are harmful to your fish and plants. Plain water will work best.

After cleaning the pond, you will want to put back some of the old water into the pond and fill the rest up with new, cleaner water. The old water contains bacteria and nutrients that are necessary for the health of your fish and plants, so you don’t want to throw it all away. Use a de-chlorinating tablet and make sure that the temperature of the water in the pond is the same as the temperature in the plastic containers. This will keep the fish from going into shock when you reintroduce them to the pond.

You can help keep your pond clean during the year by using natural and chemical additives, good filters and pumps, and a periodic cleaning of the debris that floats on the top of the pond. To get the debris off the surface, you can use purchased skimming nets, or old pantyhose and wire hangers will also do the trick. Cleaning ponds still might be the most unpleasant task of having a pond, but with a little help and advice from the experts, you will be able to do it quickly and thoroughly.

A Koi pond, properly maintained, is bliss to the senses. A well maintained pond is also vital to the health and happiness of the Koi. If you wish to call a part of nature your own, it's mandatory that you maintain it in all its beauty and glory. Some natural factors that pose a challenge to the splendour of your Koi pond can't be avoided. But proper care and maintenance from your side can definitely ensure a better life to your pond and to the Koi in your pond. An important factor in ascertaining that all goes well is getting the right kind of Koi fish supplies for your pond.

Here are some guidelines to choose the best possible quality supplies for your pond – including the fish, fish food and pond equipment.

The Koi for you;
°  General Health – Ensure that the fish is healthy. A healthy fish would be agile and swimming swiftly but gracefully. Its movements should not be haphazard or frantic. It will not be gasping for air. There should be no spots or unhealthy dullness on the skin.
°  Body shape – The shape should appear proportionate, balanced and full at the first glance. No part of the body – fins, tail, head – should be over or undersized. Females have fuller bodies compared to males.
°  Colour – Very defined or bright colours are not desirable in young Koi. It might develop into an undesirable pattern as the fish grows. Look for healthy but emerging tones.
°  You – You should ‘like' the fish. Apart from the other definite features, it's important that the fish appeals to you. Do not choose a Koi that is very ‘good' but does not excite you.

Fish food:
*  Ingredients – Food with high ash content is not good for Koi. Choose a food which is high in protein. Carefully read the constituents details given on the pack.
*  Whole fish meal – This is a good and healthy option to choose. It is made of crushed whole fish and has almost all the elements that the Koi require. This is different from white fish meal which is made up of fish left overs. So be careful.

The Koi fish pond supplies:
°  Water filtration system – Choose a system that is adequate for the size of pond you have. It is advisable to use a filter that can hold at least 10% of the total water in your pond. If you can get a bigger filter, it's better.
°  Pump – Again the power of the pump should be in relation to the size of the pond. Smaller ponds can have submersible pumps. For larger ponds it is advisable to install 2 small pumps instead of a single big one. Do not go by the capacity of the pump indicated on it. Decide on the basis of the actual quantity of water it will be able to pump in your conditions.
°  UV sterilizer – It's better to go for a water sterilizer than a water clarifier. A sterilizer kills 99% of the harmful bacteria along with floating green algae. Choose a size adequate for your pond size and flow rate.
°  Aeration system – Proper oxygen supply into the water is essential to healthy growth of Koi. Install a good quality air pump to provide for this need. For a pond of less than 6' deep, use surface aeration. For deeper ponds, use bottom aeration.

Ensure good quality at every step and for every aspect; and rest assured that your experience with Koi will be a qualitative one.

What Kind of Koi Pond Supplies Do You Need?

One of the best enhancements to your yard landscape are koi ponds. They are quite a sight to behold and a source of enjoyment for their owners. The musical sound of running water also brings in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. Maintaining and keeping the beauty of a koi pond requires extra dedication.

The owners must commit to doing maintenance that will keep the pond running properly and to make sure that the healthy condition of the koi fish is uncompromised. In other words, the owners of the koi ponds must ensure that essential pond supplies are readily available!

There are different ways of adding more flavor to your pond. Some owners introduce fountains, waterfalls or other forms of water features. This enhances the over-all aesthetics of the pond and at the same time contributes to the health and harmony of the koi fish.

The relative movement of the running water from a waterfall or fountain invariably adds oxygen to the water. But making oxygen available to your koi fish is not the end of the story. You have to maintain the quality of the water in the pond and you can do this by using filters.

These filters function as sanitizers of the water by removing the unwanted pollutants, ensuring a clean and perfect habitat for your koi fish. Also, in most cases, you will have to make use of water pumps. These pumps help in removing pollutants since in a huge pond; filters may not be strong and effective enough in moving the water and totally cleaning it.

There is no doubt that koi fish require clean water. Exposing your koi fish to polluted water will have adverse consequences on its health. It is for the purpose of maintaining the best quality of water that the owner should consider introducing water features to help circulating the water, filters to clean it and a water pump to move the water around enough to clean it thoroughly.

The hobbyist must also exercise caution in adding water to the pond. When its water level recedes, you may have to add water to it. But this however will also add chlorine to the water, to the detriment of your koi fish.

As a remedy, you have to readily apply dechlorinator by adding it to the water. Dechlorinators eliminate harmful and destructive chemicals in tap water. Similarly, the owner must monitor the water's pH and Nitrate levels. He can do this by having a water test kit which he can use in tracking the quality of the water in the pond.

When the test shows that the water's pH or Nitrate level is off, you can put baking soda or even pond salt in the water as a way of regulating it. Finally, building your koi ponds under the shade of a tree is also a good option. Most owners do this since the shade of a tree provides the koi fish a cooler environment and protects them from the harmful effects of too much sun.

Maintaining Your Pond: Vital Koi Pond Supplies

Koi ponds can be used to improve the landscape of your garden as well as provide enjoyment for their owner. The calming sound of flowing water brings a sense of relaxation and tranquility to the landscape, but most people don't realize how much work maintaining a koi fish pond requires.

Several steps need to be taken to keep the pond running well and ensuring the koi living in it stay healthy. When maintaining your Koi fish pond, make sure you have the following supplies on hand.

To enhance the beauty of your pond, add in a fountain or waterfall feature to the Koi pond. This also aerates the water and adds in more oxygen for the koi fish. The water filter is also an essential part that plays a key role in the wellbeing of the koi. The filter removes pollutants and other chemicals from the water, providing clean water for your fish to live in.

Generally, Koi ponds are large in size, therefore, a water pump is needed for water circulation, since the filter cannot carry out the job of moving all the water itself. Even if you have a waterfall or fountain, it will not stir and circulate the water well enough for the filter to remove pollutants completely.

Make sure to invest in a good pump and are taking all the necessary measures for the wellness of your koi fish.

Koi need water of a high quality to remain healthy. To keep the water clean and of high quality, make sure you keep some vital supplies on hand. When the water level of the pond starts getting low, you can add water from your garden hose. However, this will also add chlorine to the water, which is dangerous for the koi.

Keep a dechlorinator close by to add to the water to eliminate the chlorine and other harmful chemicals. Water test kits, available at pet supply stores, should be used regularly to keep track of the water's pH level and nitrate level.

Adding in a small quantity of baking soda or special pond salt into the water will help to keep the pH or irregular nitrate normal.

Since koi can only handle a few hours of sunlight a day, many people prefer to build their pond under the protective shade of a tree. The tree also protects the koi from predators like birds, who cannot easily see koi when flying overhead because of the tree.

Although it provides a lot of protection, the tree will litter the pond with dead leaves, twigs and debris. Always keep a pond skimmer close by to remove debris from the pond and keep the water clean.

You can also use a bird net to protect the pond, and this will also collect debris for you so that you can remove it easily and regularly.

Ponds often form dirty looking foam on top from constant aeration of the water as well as dirt and debris. Invest in a foam remover made specifically for ponds to eliminate this and keep your pond looking beautiful.

Make sure your foam remover is safe to use for your fish, and also remember to use a small quantity whenever needed.

The Koi Supplies Essential for Breeding Koi

Koi supplies are numerous and it is important to identify those that your fish need the most. Knowing when to use and how to operate it are vital when taking care of your supplies and to make them work at its maximum.

One of the most colorful and attractive pond fish are Kois. But taking care of them requires a knowledge on proper care and knowing the essential supplies you will need for giving them a comfortable place to live.

One essential Koi supply that will give the fish a more tranquil environment is a fountain. The fountain can provide the pond where the fish live sufficiently apart as it stirs the water and is a good source of blocking the unwanted noise that the fish may find disturbing. Promoting good health for your fish is vital hence using a filter is a necessity to maintain the cleanliness of the water.

Filters promote quality water as it removes pollutant that will prevent common health issues with your Koi fish. Filter supplies always come with a pump which keeps the water moving for a more efficient action of the filter.

Some install waterfalls or fountains on their pond to keep the movement of the water going that assist in the filtering process. It is not advisable however that these will completely replace pumps since their actions are not strong enough to support the filtration process needed to clean up the water.

There are some Koi supplies that are not used on a daily basis but you need to keep them handy as you will need them again. A dechlorinator is used only when trying to replenish the water level of the pond with tap water. It helps eliminate harmful chemicals and keep the newly replaced water clean.

You should keep track of the pH and nitrate levels of the water by using a Koi supply that can test these chemicals on a weekly basis. Test kits are available in most pet supply stores. You should need either a baking soda or salt which you can sprinkle into the pond to help regulate the levels of nitrates and pH after testing the water with low levels of both chemicals.

Koi fish are also prone to become the prey to other predators such as kingfishers, raccoons, Herons, cats and foxes because of their colorful and brilliant colors. One way to avoid this is to create a pond designed to keep predators from wading into the water such as creating deeper pond and placing high overhangs on the pond’s sides to keep predators from reaching the water.

Placing a net is a koi supply used to conveniently keep the water clean from falling debris such as leaves for outdoor ponds. Koi fish need food to live and it is one of the most important Koi supply to keep on hand. Keep different variations of food sources to give your fish a treat. Most kois like to feed from your hand so treat yourself with the pleasure of doing so.

Koi needs special care and giving them the best comfort through the proper koi supplies is worth the effort.

In Search of Koi Pond Supplies!

There are good reasons why koi fish ponds are very popular enhancements to our home landscapes. Professional landscapers and designers recommend the building of koi ponds as a way of giving a tranquil and park-like appearance to your homes.

Indeed, the harmony of the sound of running water brings is like music to one's ears. It relaxes the mind and keeps your spirit attuned with nature. Koi ponds however require certain attention. Maintaining them needs careful planning, dedication and the usual supplies to keep the ponds and the koi in the best condition.

I am not going to dwell on the part that requires careful planning and dedication. I will reserve discussing these issues in some future articles. I am more interested in talking about the usual supply requirements in order to better keep and maintain the koi ponds.

Some of the most essential supplies that owners must not forget to have acccess to are filters, water pumps, dechlorinator and test kits. Having water features in our ponds, like waterfalls and fountains, is similarly a beautiful and practical way of enhancing the aesthetic value of the ponds.

Filters remove unwanted pollutants from the water. Keeping these pollutants out helps in maintaining the quality of water and this in turn facilitates the good health of our koi fish. Pond owners are advised to ensure that filters are up-and-running to help in doing away with pollutants.

It also bears stressing that koi ponds are generally large; the bigger the pond, the more area your koi can move around in. But due to the large area of the pond, you need to have water pumps. Your filters may not be strong enough to move the water around and also clean it completely. With water pumps, water movement is optimized and as a result, water is thoroughly cleaned.

It is also good to include water features in the design of the koi ponds. These water features can take the form of a waterfall or a fountain. Either of these will not only add beauty to the pond but also help in moving and stirring the water around. These three -- filters, water pumps and water features combine together to ensure that the quality of water serves to benefit the over-all health of the koi.

It cannot be denied that water quality is a big factor in maintaining the health of the koi fish. Water quality is in most cases affected by adding more water to the pond from your garden hose.

Ordinarily, when water levels are down, we add water to the pond from the hose. But doing so will allow additional chlorine into the pond. Chlorine is an unwanted addition to our koi pond and in order to remedy this problem, a dechlorinator will be of big help.

Adding dechlorinators to the water will eliminate harmful chemicals in our tap water. But that's not all. You have to continuously monitor the quality of the water. Monitoring water quality requires water test kits, the kind that you can easily buy in pet shops. These water test kits will help you keep track and monitor the water's pH and nitrate levels.

Essential Supplies For Taking Care Of Your Koi Pond

Many people find the sound of running water tranquil and relaxing, and so they choose to have koi ponds in their yard to enhance the landscape and find some enjoyment in listening to the sounds and watching the koi.

However, maintaining a koi pond is not as easy as many think. You will need to do several things to make sure the koi are kept healthy and the pond keeps running correctly. The supplies mentioned below are vital to have on hand when maintaining your koi pond.

Consider adding a fountain or waterfall to your pond. It will add to the pond's beauty and also keep the fish healthy by aerating and circulating the water, thereby providing oxygen for the koi. A filter is another item that is absolutely vital to the health of the fish and the maintenance of the pond.

This removes pollutants from the water, providing your koi with clean water to keep them safe and healthy.

Since koi ponds are large, you will also need a water pump to circulate the water and allow the filter to clean it. Fountains and waterfalls will not circulate the water enough to allow the filter to clean out all of it, and so a pump is vital to ensuring the cleanliness of the water.

Use a larger filter and pump for a larger pond to make sure there isn't too much strain on the equipment.

To keep your koi fish healthy, make sure your water is of the highest quality possible. You can ensure this high quality by using a dechlorinator, which will remove harmful chemicals from the water you add from the hose to top up the pond once water levels fall.

Also have a water testing kit on hand to monitor the pH and nitrate levels of the water. This testing kit is available at most pet supply stores. If pH and nitrate levels are irregular, you can use baking soda or pond salt to bring them back to normal.

Many koi owners will choose to build their koi pond under a tree to protect their koi from excess sunlight, birds or other predators. Although a tree can protect the koi well, it also litters the pond with debris, twigs and dead leaves.

Use a pond skimmer to clean the surface of the water regularly, allowing enough sunlight to reach the koi and providing them with clean water.

If you choose to have a waterfall in your pond, use waterfall foam to fill cracks and spaces in the rocks. This dark foam expands and seals the spaces, allowing your waterfall to flow smoothly and beautifully.

You may also have to deal with a different kind of foam: the dirty kind that forms on top of water in your pond because of aeration and debris.

Use a foam remover to get rid of this and make your pond look great again. Make sure the remover you use is safe for koi fish and don't use too much of it – it is usually very concentrated and a small amount is enough for a large koi pond.

Koi Pond Supplies

Koi Ponds and Koi Keeping were once upon a time, considered luxuries only afforded by the rich and famous. Nowadays, with the explosion of interest in koi-keeping the world over, the costs connected with such an absorbing hobby have come within the grasp of many more people.

As with many pastimes or interests, the cost of enjoying such an activity usually reduces over time. The suppliers are able to pass on savings to their buyers as demand increases.

There will always be a range of budgets when it comes to Koi Keeping - there'll be enthusiasts with limitless resources that can afford the ultimate, custom-designed Taj Mahal of Koi Ponds, and then there'll be enthusiasts whose budget is a tad more conservative.

In former times, the building of the Koi Pond was on no account hurried - it was created with great purpose and attention to detail. Its design was intended to inspire calm and serenity and to enhance the inner harmony of its beholders. Now, in more rapidly paced times, whatever it is that people want, they generally want it right now. They still want the resultant "calm and tranquility" that it inspires, but they want it to a set budget and they want it right away. Bearing this in mind, some enterprising companies have developed products to meet this demand. With the creation of Koi Pond Kits, a whole new generation of beginner Koi Keepers has emerged, thus stimulating the supply and demand of Koi Keeping Supplies.

Many Koi novices can, and often do, go a tad overboard when they are first drawn to the hobby, and waste outrageous amounts of money, only to realize afterwards, that they've made some somewhat poor choices. If you're considering Koi-Keeping, then it definitely pays to do your research first. Aside from the initial outlay of establishing a habitat for ones Koi, and the price of the Koi themselves, there are always on-going expenses associated with feeding, breeding (if that's of interest), maintaining water quality, and aerating or oxygenating the pond, to mention but a few.

Filters - Koi health relies heavily on good filtration. If waste and other pollutants are not removed efficiently, your Koi will sooner or later become sick and perhaps die. To avoid this, simply do not compromise when it comes to purchasing a good quality filter. Ensure you do your homework on this one and make sure you get the best filter to match the requirements of your pond.

Fountains and waterfalls - besides the visual appeal of fountains and waterfalls, with the sounds of flowing water, and the play of sunlight as the water rises and falls, these features also fulfil a more practical purpose. They help to aerate and consequently, oxygenate the water, thus helping your Koi to breathe better. They also help to mask the sound of the Pond Pump.

Pumps - a filter can only work if the water it is attempting to clean, is moving. A pump is necessary to move the water around. But be careful - a pump that isn't sufficient for the volume of your pond just won't do the task - likewise, if it's too powerful, you could kill your Koi.

Dechlorinator - every so often a pond level might drop and need topping up. Tap water generally has chlorine and other substances that can be harmful to aquatic life. For this reason, you really need a good quality dechlorinator to safely remove the chlorine so that you can keep your Koi healthy.

Water Condition Test Kits - to make certain your pond is always healthy, there are easy-to-use test kits available at most pet stores. Weekly ph and nitrate level testing can reduce the chance of toxic build-ups that may harm your Koi.

Water Chemicals - should your test kit indicate that your ponds level of acidity or nitrates needs regulating, always keep on hand a supply of pond salt or baking soda and follow the kits instructions.

Pond Netting - whilst not always necessary, pond netting is just another level of protection that you can give to your Koi. After all, we find them stunningly beautiful and fascinating to watch, and so do their natural predators. Whilst netting is one level of protection, the depth of the pond may be sufficient to afford your Koi a safe hiding place. By positioning the pond under the natural screening of trees, birds will find it difficult to view your Koi as a potential meal. The draw back to this location is that you'll have to carry out more frequent skimming of leaves and debris to maintain your ponds water quality.

Food - Koi really are omnivores. Combined with their friendly personalities, you'll always find them happy to eat out of your hand, provided the treats are to their liking. Keep on hand a good supply of commercially formulated Koi food and a variety of Koi-Friendly healthy goodies, such as watermelon, lettuce, cooked pumpkin or carrots, even garden worms, Yum!

Essential Koi Supplies

There are some essential Koi supplies that you should keep handy for taking care of your koi pond and keeping your fish healthy. Basic items include food and a water testing kit for making sure the water is clean and well filtered. More advanced supplies include medications and perhaps a thermometer for closer regulation of water temperature.

The health of your koi begins with water testing supplies. Analyzing the pond water is critical to maintaining a chemical balance in the water that supports healthy fish. Test kits for your pond are available at most koi suppliers. Most of them work by using chemical testing materials to indicate the pH balance of the pond which you check against a color chart. Koi do best when the condition of the water is consistent. Testing kits include chemical supplies you can add to the water in small quantities to change the pH balance. The goal is a pH somewhere between 7 and 9. Various things affect the quality of your water, including the addition of tap water, rainwater and runoff from rainwater. Another koi care item you might want to stock is a supply of dechlorination tablets for when you add tap water to the pond.

Other water supplies for your koi pond are filters, and a pump. Filters include man made filters as well as natural filters. Check the working of any mechanical devices from time to time and consider keeping a back up pump handy if you have a large pond or a number of valuable koi.

A quarantine tank is another essential koi supply for a well-stocked pond. If you are a koi collector and you like to add to your koi family from time to time, the quarantine tank is useful for introducing new fish in a controlled fashion. You can monitor the health of your new koi while getting them acclimatized to the pond environment by using water from the pond in the quarantine tank. If, for any reason, the new koi experience problems, you will save your existing collection from exposure to any bacteria or diseases introduced by the new fish.

You can test the quarantine tank in the same way that you test the larger koi pond with your chemical supplies.

Another handy supply to have for the koi tank is an airstone. Typically this is a porous stone, usually limestone, which you set in the bottom of the pond. The airstone will help to oxygenate the pond. You can also find airstones made from fiberglass and other synthetic materials. You can also find oxygenator plants. Look for anacharis, hornwork, vallisneria and more. Your favorite koi pond supplies store may be able to make recommendations based on their inventory for other plants that are beneficial for the koi pond. Floating plants, such as water lilies, are good for adding shade to the pond. If you use a lot of plants, remember to use algae eaters, such as snails, and check the pond from time to time to clean out debris from petals and leaves that might clog the filters or present obstacles to your koi.

Answer by Sherry
You dont really need help over the winter, all there is is to 1. Stop feeding them and 2. keep a whole in the ice. Simple as that

oh yeah make sure the pond stays leaf free
