Oxygen Preservation in Koi Ponds

When browsing through your local fish store’s medicine and testing aisle, you probably won’t find a test for oxygen. The importance of sufficient oxygen in your pond water is often understated, and misunderstood. While most fish owners understand the importance of low nitrates, did you know that low oxygen levels is one of the most lethal silent killers in the fish hobby?

The most common cause of low oxygen levels in a Koi pond is the overuse of algaecide. When it comes to treating algae with chemicals, more is NOT always better. In fact, as algae die off, oxygen levels in your water plummet. Most experienced aquarium and pond hobbyists can attest to the horror of treating for algae and finding your entire fish stock dead within an hour from asphyxiation.

Unlike nitrite, nitrate and metal poisoning, there’s no treatment for low oxygen levels once the fish begin to starve for air and experience stress. It can kill within an hour, and if you don’t catch it quickly (i.e. within the first 10 minutes), your fish usually have no chance of recovery. Fish suffering from low oxygen levels will start to linger at the surface of the water, usually gasping for air. After the first 5-10 minutes, the fish will lose control of their swim bladder and begin to struggle to stay upright. Within the next 45 minutes or so, internal damage to the vital organs occurs. Literally, the fish shuts down, fails to breath and quickly dies.

]]>

For every pond owner with Koi, preserving oxygen levels can be very challenging. You have a very large volume of water, and if you’ve planned it your pond correctly, you have several deep pockets of water. You’re more likely to struggle with oxygen levels in your pond true if you’re establishing a new system, or struggling with algae in an existing one. Luckily there are some easy inexpensive ways to keep oxygen level high in your pond to keep your fish happy and healthy.

The first tool to keep oxygen levels high is circulation. A lot of people have the perception that air bubbles or air stones will provide sufficient oxygen. While these air systems help, it’s not the action of the air bubbles rising from the bottom that provides oxygen. Instead, it’s the breaking of the surface of the water that allows oxygen exchange. When you have sufficient movement across the surface of the water, your oxygen levels will rise.

When treating for algae, this becomes even more important. Add an extra power-head to your pond when you use chemicals such as algaecide. Point the power-head up so you have plenty of surface movement. This simple step prevents the tragedy of losing your precious Koi to something preventable as low oxygen levels in your water.

Another commonly overlooked tool in increasing oxygen level is plants. Plants also help to naturally control algae! When you add plants to your pond, the plants compete with microbial algae cells for carbon dioxide consumption. Keeping your pond at least 1/3 covered in plants keeps your water clear and algae free. Best of all, plants help release oxygen into the water, which keeps your levels in balance. A great alternative to potted pond plants are floating plants such as water hyacinth or water cabbage. The most successful ponds contain lots of plants, which keep your water and your fish healthy.

Remember to conduct regular water changes for your pond, depending on your bio-load. Koi are messy fish, and if you have a fully stocked pond, you should aim for one 25% change per week. Water changes replenish oxygen and vital buffers that help keep your water stable. There’s nothing more helpful than regular water changes for your pond. Remember- if you take care of your water, your fish will generally take care of themselves because they will have a naturally supporting environment that fosters health.

Koi Fish Ponds Breeding and Care tips

If you wish to keep Koi in your water garden, you must also be prepared to take care of them. Attending to their welfare is something that you must not ignore at all. Koi became popular because of their attractive features, but don’t let the appeal of the Koi entice you to run out and buy them immediately.

There are so many things to consider when owning Koi. It takes a lot of effort, time and money. The first thing you must do before buying Koi is do extensive research and planning. Since Koi became popular, many have become experts at keeping them. Always be sure that the information you are receiving is accurate and can be relied on.

Providing a good environment for the Koi

A preparation for their proper habitat is necessary. Koi are cold water fish. It will be better if you can keep them in a larger pond based on their number. The pond should have good filtration to keep the water clear. All the dead algae, insects and fish wastes should be removed. It is important that you have a biological filtration that makes a nitrogen cycle. It will keep the waste from turning into ammonia that can kill your Koi. The only way to keep the Koi alive is to have quality water. You have to ensure that the pond is ready and well prepared before introducing the fish to it.

You must look for a quality protein food for Koi. Medium-sized pellets tend to work great for the larger fish, and bits of fruit as a tasty snack. You must ensure you give them a good variety as too much of one thing is never good. Remember it's important not to over feed them as leftover foods can rote and contaminate the water.

You also need to be aware of what predators will endanger your Koi. As an example, cats and raccoons are a common threat, and prowl by the water’s edge in anticipation for a quick meal. Planting a variety of aquatic plants around the perimeter of the pond won’t allow predators such easy access to the water’s edge.

Breeding the Koi

When you are ready to spawn your Koi, make sure you have a moderate temperature of water. You must also know the kind of breeder that you want for example the color combination and the pattern. This will help you determine your choice of breeding partners because the offspring will vary on the combination of parents that you have chosen. You must be careful in choosing so that you won’t be disappointed by the result of the offspring. When the fry hatch, it’s necessary to keep them from their parents. Koi are prone to eating their young.

It is important that you keep the proper balance of oxygen in the water to help you reach success in your koi breeding. Not keeping the proper amount of water in your pond with the right amount of oxygen could easily cause the fry to die.

When making your decision on how many successfully bred Koi to keep, you need to consider a couple of factors. How much space do they need? A quick rule of thumb for Koi ponds would say, “One inch of fish per 10 gallons of water”. Larger fish require more space so be sure to do a rough calculations. Koi are sociable and like to swim in groups but if you overstock the pond then the fish could become sick or die.

Koi Pond Care: Top Tips for Taking Care of Koi Ponds

Koi pond care is important to keep your backyard oasis beautiful and healthy. Koi ponds for fish are a great asset to your property and can be a source of constant enjoyment, but they do require quite a bit of care and attention.

Koi are delicate fish who must be fed and cared for very carefully which means taking good care of their environment. Below are a few tips to keep your koi happy and healthy for many years.

Water

The water in your koi pond is the main environment for your fish and as such should be carefully monitored. The first thing you want to keep an eye on is constant temperature change and while you cannot control Mother Nature, you can take steps to avoid very hot or cold temperatures in your pond. Unless you live in the extreme south, you will want to install a water heater for the pond. The only thing you can do for extremely hot temperatures is build a pond that is deep enough for fish to find cooler spots and provide shade for your pond. Shade can be accomplished by placement or by building an arbor. Beware of placing the pond directly under trees that can shed leaves into your pond. The leafy matter will fall into the pond and decay causing additional headaches for pond maintenance.

There may come a time when you need to change the water in your koi pond, but remember to do this slowly and gradually. If you are using regular tap water that contains high levels of chlorine or other salts be sure to treat it accordingly before adding it to the pond. It is also important to keep the water moving or aerated. You can purchase a fountain to do this for you but many people simply add a waterfall for aeration and aesthetics.

Health

Koi are delicate in some respects however, they have a hardy immune system. This does not mean though that they will never become ill. Watch for signs of illness constantly so that you can remove the affected fish and treat it immediately with the appropriate medications. When koi do become ill, the likely cause is stress, which lowers the immune system. Stressors include but are not limited to parasites, over handling, poor water, chemicals or improper feeding. Keep a close eye on these and other common stressors to protect the health of your fish.

Food

Koi should be fed twice a day in five-minute intervals. Choose their favorite food and then offer all they will eat for a five-minute period. These feeding periods should be at nearly the same time every day and can be tapered off for the winter hibernation period.

Conclusion

Creating a koi pond is pretty simple but as with any type of pet care, it can be a job to keep the fish healthy. Along with the above tips, you will also want to monitor ph levels in the water, keep an eye out for predators especially birds, and place enough koi in the pond so they can socialize but not be overcrowded.

Things You Need to Know Before Building Your Koi Ponds

Koi fish, are also known as 'dragon fish' by some enthusiasts. Personally they remind me of the catfish and carp I have seen over the years. I used to catch catfish and put them in the cow's watering trough. That was the extent of my koi pond but then again that was 40 years ago and I was only about 10 at the time.

Koi fish were originally bred in Japan. Today koi are bred and kept by hobbyists and professional fish farmers all over the world. The number of Koi lovers would blow your mind.

Koi are most often kept in natural or man-made koi ponds.

NOTE: It is most important to know how to keep your Koi fish so they remain healthy but once you know how you can keep them thriving for many years to come. Well maintained koi ponds have a subtle beauty that is a perfect compliment to the noble and enigmatic "dragon-fish".

Learn How To Manage Your Koi Ponds...

Like most things in life Koi Ponds take a bit of care and has a learning curve. So don't give up if you find you mess a few things up at the beginning. You can however learn a lot from the available books so be sure to read up before you take on this great hobby.

Koi, like all other living things can become diseased. Because your koi ponds are outdoors it normal for organic matter to fall into your koi pond and change the chemical balance. Another thing that might happen may involve your filter getting blocked or breaking.

But that's not all, you also have predator because you pond is outdoors. Look out for cats who love fish and big birds. Note: I said 'big birds' not 'Bigbird'.

It's a learning curves so instead of getting depressed when something goes wrong just fix it and learn from the experience, you will be an expert at koi ponds in no time at all.

Because Koi fish can be pricey it's best to start with plain ole goldfish to test your koi pond so that if you don't have things right you won't go broke getting things right.

A word of warning to those who decide to go the koi ponds way before they have ever taken care of fish. Using my son as an example, it would be a disaster. Start with an aquarium first and learn how to spot problems with the tank and of course your fish. You need to know how to detect if a fish is ill and that can be harder to do in a pond.

Check out your local pet shops and local breeders and learn what you can there. Also pickup a good koi ponds starter book and learn all you can. Doing this first will make for less problems later.

Upgrading your garden with koi ponds

Having a garden right at your backyard is indeed a good source of good vibes. It is the best area in the house to recharge for the next working day. But for those who are not satisfied with just a place with tiny bushes and flowers here and there, you might want to consider putting up a koi fish pond in your garden. This water feature will not only serve as an upgrade to your fish pond, but will also add more appeal and tranquillity to your garden.

Unlike other types of pond, a koi fish pond has to be well-maintained and requires more hands in cleaning and even in installation. Many assume that the fish is the most important part of a fish pond is of course the fish. But the truth is that if the pond itself is not well-built, you will not be able to enjoy the pleasures it can offer. Not to mention the fact that the lives of the koi in the pond will not last. Considering these things, we can say that the most important part would be the design and installation of the whole water feature.

The first thing you need to think of is the size of the pond. If you have really decided to put koi in your fish pond, you should make it spacious. Koi fish can grow big even in a small area so it is essential to put them in a big pond to avoid congestion. You should also think of the number of koi you will put in the pond. The size of the pond should be at least equal to the number of fish again, to avoid overcrowding since koi grow in size.

After you have settled the size of you pond, the next thing you need to focus on is the area in your garden where there is ample shade. This is where your koi pond can be perfectly placed. But remember that your pond should not be placed under a large tree of some sort. This is because of the leaves that may fall in the water. The dried leaves can ignite the growth of algae in the pond. It is advisable to put some marine ornamental plants to add more shade to the koi pond.

There are pond equipments that are needed to maintain your koi pond. Pond filters, pond ventilators, pumps and water conditioners are in fact necessary to keep the pond in mint condition. Although it may be costly, a pond fountain can be added not just to accentuate the pond itself but also to help the water be always in motion. This is to keep organic matters and algae from building up rapidly. Worry not since these things are available at any pet or garden stores and even in the internet.

Try not to be discouraged by the things that need to be done when putting up a koi fish pond. They may be laborious at fist, but the benefits the pond can offer will not even match the work you have put to it. It will be much more.

Question by goatspeak: Is it ok to fill a newly built koi pond with irrigation ditch water that comes from a river?
Would doing that be better than using chlorinated city water? I have koi in another smaller pond and will transfer them over along with all the water that is in that pond.

Intriguing idea, but you will have no control of what comes in. Are you willing to experiment for a time and check for losses?

Koi Fish Ponds - Why? Because My Fresh Water Aquarium Just Isn't Doing it For Me

Are you ready to take that next step? Getting bored with your freshwater aquarium? Kinda stuck on what steps to take next?

Wouldn't it be nice to take some of your indoor aquarium fish outdoors, I am sure they would thank you for it. If this is you then you just might be ready to give your fish some exercise and to increase your property's value.

All the things you have already learned that keeps your fish healthy just might make it easier to get started with your own Koi pond or fish pond. So if you are able to take care of any of your fish that might have any fish diseases. You know how to maintain a steady water temperature. Can you handle water changes, testing the water, then you are going to find creating or building your own fish pond easier than most. But even if you are a newbie it doesn't take much to learn fish pond success.

Of Course You Will Need To Do A Bit Of Research

Money is usually a limiting factor so your research will help you understand just how big you can go with your fish pond without draining your bank account.

You know that water will always try to level it's self so you are going to need a pretty level area with access to a water supply. Of course that water supply could come from your garden hose.

No one likes to be over crowded and neither do the fish you will put in your fish pond, so don't try to cram too many into the area you provide. Just remember that your pond is still somewhat like an aquarium and fish need elbow room. It is said that each of your fish will require a minimum of one gallon of fresh water each in order to keep healthy and happy.

Don't do like my son did and put in more than one fighting fish, like the Betta fish, also known as the Siamese fighting fish, as they will seek each other out to fight and that's not a good thing in your fish ponds. I was reading that even if you put a fighting fish, like the Betta into a lake they will find each other and start their own little death match.

You should be sure you read up on how to build fish ponds before you start digging. Do you want a concrete bottom or are you going to use a liner? I personally prefer the less expensive route and pick the liner, plus I can get them in different colours and there is no need to start painting concrete.

Do you want rocks all around it or would you prefer to build your deck around it. What ever you decide it's best to decide before you start the digging process. Which ever method you choose be sure you make the edge of your fish pond safe for those on foot, they may not want to go for a swim if it's not safe.

Think of Your Fish Ponds As Large Aquariums And You Will Do Fine.

Having fish in your fish ponds isn't a whole lot different than having them in your aquarium. You still need to monitor them for health reasons and you still have to maintain the water conditions. Fish can't survive long without a good supply of oxygen so keep the algae level down and your fish will thank you by living long and healthy lives.

JP has been a lover of fish for many years and the idea of building koi ponds was scary to him for a long time until he started reading up on how to create a fish pond. At that point the lights came on JP started his koi pond project and so can you. It just takes a little planning and your koi fish will love you for it. fish ponds

How To Build Koi Fish Ponds

As the hobby of Koi-keeping becomes more popular, so the building of Koi fish ponds in people’s backyards has seen a rise in numbers over recent years. The chance to own and care for these beautiful sociable creatures entices many to start, what often turns out to be, a life-long hobby. In this article, as a beginner Koi enthusiast, you will learn a few what-not-to-dos when it comes to Koi pond building.

Remember, first of all, that once Koi fish ponds are built, they are permanent structures so careful thought and planning beforehand are crucial to the success of constructing Koi ponds. Do not, for example, choose a location where the entire Koi fish pond will be exposed to direct sunlight all the time. Koi fish ponds need to be shady but not completely in the dark so don’t build them next to large trees either.

Keep in mind that Koi fish are capable of growing to enormous sizes. A mature Koi has a length of about 36 inches but some have been known to grow even bigger than this. Whatever you do, avoid building a small pond or you will live to regret it! The size of your Koi fish pond needs to take into account the length these fish will grow as well as the number of Koi you intend to keep.

In addition, do not build a shallow Koi pond and think that this will be adequate. Shallow waters make Koi easy prey to predators like the blue heron but also it can cause large sudden changes in water temperature. The latter is harmful to Koi as it will cause the fish undue stress which will reduce their immune system and in turn make them vulnerable to viruses and infections. Therefore, for the purpose of Koi protection from predators as well as to keep pond water temperature stable, the recommended depth of a Koi fish pond is a minimum of 4 feet.

Speaking of predators, help to protect your beloved Koi by also making sure that the sides of the pond are built vertically steep and smooth. Avoid opting for ledges around the sides of the pond as raccoons have been known to use ledges to help them wade into the water and steal dinner for themselves.

Do not build a Koi fish pond without also building a quarantine tank where you can monitor new Koi fish for signs of illness prior to introducing them to the actual pond. A separate tank can also act as a hospital area for treating Koi when they are sick or injured.

Keep the shape of Koi fish ponds simple – either round, square or rectangle. These shapes are easiest to clean via a filter. Do not think about building a Koi pond without installing a (preferably large) filtration system. Koi produces a lot of metabolic waste on a day-to-day basis which must be removed efficiently to keep the pond water as clean and clear as possible. This is vital to maintaining the health of these fish.

Koi fish ponds will also need a pump to move the water through the filters, an ultraviolet steriliser to stop algae from turning the water green, a pond water aerator and a pond heater. Without the latter, you may well end up losing a few Koi fish at the end of every cold winter.

Happy Koi-keeping!

Basic Tips on Building Koi Ponds

Koi ponds are more than just a hole with water. Koi breeders should bear in mind that Koi, like any other pets need to have an environment that is safe and healthy for them to live. Breeders should learn the basic essential tools they need for making the koi pond conducive for living. The secrets to a successful way of keeping koi fish are proper ventilation, water ponds and the fish itself.

Primarily you need to determine the requirements for building the koi pond. Each pond needs planning for the specification of its features. How big should it be? The pond where koi will live must be big because Koi gets large.

A standard pond for this kind of fish should hold not less than 1000 gallons of water and must be at least 3-5 feet deep. Your decision on the shape and the size of ponds for the koi will basically depend on your preference.

The pond should be built in an ideal location. You may want to have a pond in an area where you could see the fish as often as you want. You should also consider the accessibility of the pond as you will be spending frequent visits on the area to feed the fish. You can also consider building a small pond indoor or outdoor whatever gives you the convenience.

You should however consider that Koi need to be exposed to sunlight for few hours everyday. The best times will be in the morning and in the afternoon. Koi skin can be burnt by direct sunlight at noon so they must be provided with safety abode.

Your outdoor pond should be away from trees to prevent the pond from being damaged by the growing roots as the trees grow. Placing a net above the pond can also provide protection against the falling debris from the trees.

You may find delight of giving your koi both an indoor and outdoor pond but creating one should be properly conceptualized in terms of safety, accessibility and ideal environment.

When building the pond you will be needing pond liners. You can use PVC but a butyl rubber liner is recommended because of its strength. Concrete has the lowest or the cheapest building cost while fiberglass is recommended when you want to have a pond for an indistinct lifetime.

You have to make sure that it would be better to construct a pond with vertical walls for smaller ponds to boost balanced arrangement of water temperature. You should also consider providing protection of your koi from outside predators by creating a higher wall on the pond.

In addition to the mentioned requisites other koi pond equipment that you will need include biological filters, aeration, circulation pump and space wide enough to keep koi from being crowded. These are the things that you have to consider when preparing and designing a pond for koi.

The filter will be the one to purify the water. It will be responsible for cleaning the water from waste products, microorganisms and other poisonous substance that can produce water contamination.

The aerator will supply air to the water and will keep the stagnant water continuously moving. The aerator will be providing the fish with oxygen. The pump on the other hand moves the water through the filter and the aerator. These are basic preparation when conceptualizing the ideal koi pond for your favorite fish.

An Introduction To Koi Ponds

KOI PONDS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE GOOD LUCK

Koi ponds have become a popular hobby in the world, and the reasons are clear as to why. Koi are beautiful, vibrant fish that can literally light your day. Koi come in many colors, varieties, and kinds, so it is likely that everyone in the world can find at least one type of Koi that would suit their likes. While Koi may be a welcomed beauty to your pond, they also have an interesting history attached to them.

In Chinese culture, Koi ponds are said to being good luck to their owners. Koi ponds are used as an overall plan to fulfill their lives. Other parts of the world consider Koi ponds as a form of relaxation and serenity. In the united states, more and more people seem to find Koi ponds to be fun more then anything else. No matter what the reason you find to have a Koi pond, they are sure to brighten your life.

LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF KOI FISHES BEFORE BUYING

However, Koi keeping should not be taken lightly. Koi, like any other animal, require time and money to maintain. The majority of first time Koi owners fail because they get the idea that keeping Koi is easy in some way. Do not let this discourage you though, as educating yourself will greatly improve your chances of succeeding.

It is important for you to learn all you can BEFORE you begin obtaining the things you need for Koi keeping. This way, you will not slip up and have to replace anything that you have already done or bought. Planning ahead will not only save your money, but it will potentially save your sanity as well.

It is important to learn the information for yourself rather then relying on other sources. People such as your product dealer and pond builder will have limited knowledge, but should not be trusted for a reliable source, as they are selling products and may be bias. Plus, once you are at home with your Koi, your product dealer or pond builder may not be available to help you in the event of a problem.

KOI FISHES HAVE PERSONALITIES

You would not believe that Koi actually have personalities similar to other animals. They are social, and can even be trained to eat directly from their owners hands. The more time you spend with your Koi, the more you will notice each Koi has individual characteristics and traits.

Koi have been known to live for up to 200 years at time, but generally the average lifespan of a healthy Koi is about 30 years. So if you are looking for along time pet companion, Koi may be a good choice.

BUILDING YOUR KOI HABITAT

Before ever buying Koi, you must create a proper habitat for them. This is where information from your pond builder and supplier will come in handy. However, you should not rely on the opinions of just one person. It may be a god idea to do research on your own, before you go to purchase the materials needed for you pond. Because of it's popularity, an unlimited supply of resources can be found on the topic of Koi keeping. Visit your local library, fishery center, or research online. There are quite a few things needed to sustain a habitable pond.

When it comes to pond size, bigger is always better. Koi have a habit of growing rather fast, so you have to consider pond size at the same time you are considering how many Koi you are going to put it in.

YOUR FILTRATION SYSTEM IS IMPORTANT

There are 2 types of filtration, mechanical and biological. Mechanical filtration relives the pond of solids such as dead algae, insects, and Koi wastes. It is important to have enough filtration to sustain the size of the pond, and the amount and size of your Koi. Biological filtration causes a nitrogen cycle, which is what removes dissolved wastes from your pond. Without biological filtration, built up waste will turn into ammonia and kill your Koi within just a few days.

Besides the technical aspects of your pond, you will also have the ability to create a visually appealing area as well. Waterfalls, fountains, and other water features will not only add a visual show to your pond, but it will also create movement and sound. A variety of plants and flowers are also available for your pond.
