Appreciating Koi Colors

Koi fish are some of the most amazing fish I have ever seen. Their stunning color patterns and the grace with which they swim are just beautiful to watch...These beautiful color combinations must be part of the reason why koi are really treasured and taken care of by their owners.

And their true popularity makes the Japanese people really proud for having started their selective breeding which has resulted in the gorgeous fish traits that we see today.

Koi colors should be true bright colors for the fish to be considered healthy. Also, koi colors range from red, black, orange, green and even blue. While there are different combinations of these colors, a red koi must really be bright red while a black one must really be deep black.

Dull black colors or those with slight gray changes may mean that the fish is not healthy. When the white colors are not extremely white this means they are not exactly in good condition. There is no denying that koi colorations do mirror its health. If they are not in a healthy condition or are exposed to polluted waters, koi will change colors.

What used to be bright will invariably turn dull. Understanding this kind of peculiarity in the koi fish will help you a lot if you buy them from pet shops. This kind of understanding will also serve you in learning how to care for your koi.

Koi fish are available in many varying colors. The most notable colors however are red, yellow, blue white, black, and cream. Having domesticated koi for almost two hundred years, the Japanese coined certain terms to distinguish and describe the colors and characteristics of koi fish.

Breeders have also identified a large number of particular categories. The biggest part of the Gosanke family includes Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki variety of fish.

Kohaku koi are white koi with red markings. The color must be as white as can be; meaning pure white. The red markings should have well marked edges that cover between 50 and 70 percent of the body.

Koi belonging to the Taisho Sanshoki family are also known as Taisho Sanke or Sanke. These are white fish mixed with red and black splotches. Again, the white coloring must be intensely white. And the red and black colors must be deep colorings with well-marked edges.

The Showa Sanshoki, or Showa variety, is similar to the Sanke variety of koi, and are also white, black and red in color. The only difference is that there is a mainly black with red and white markings in the Showa koi.

Different koi varieties have their own distinct color markings. The Ogon koi, for example, come in different colors but are all one color. Distinctively, they should have even hue in their whole body without patterns or markings.

One can enhance koi colors by feeding them a rich food. They can be fed marigold, plankton, shrimp, and blue-green algae called Spirulina. These types of food are also included as part of commercial koi food preparations.

Similarly, feeding koi frozen or freeze-dried foods, e.g. brine shrimp and daphnia, will also enhance their colors since each of these types of foods provide carotene pigments which are the major pigments of the koi's skin.

4 Common Koi Types and What Makes Them Unique

Koi fish are very colorful and beautiful creatures. For those that have taken the decision to have their own Koi pond, species selection is an important part of the process. There are dozens of Koi types; however, four species are the most popular. As with any other species of fish, each of the types of Koi will have their own attributes and at the same time share certain behavioral traits in common. You should be aware of all of these distinctions and commonalities prior to selecting one purely based on its aesthetic beauty.

All Koi fish are variations of the common carp. As such, they do well in cooler water temperatures, but should not be kept in waters lower than 59 degrees Fahrenheit. When placed in waters cooler than this, all species of Koi can begin to have issues related to proper food digestion and even lowered immune systems.

Size, of course, is an issue with fully grown Koi ranging from 2 to even 3 feet in length. Water depth should never be below 3 feet in order to maintain sufficient swimming space and temperature consistency for all Koi types.

Butterfly Koi

Of all Koi types, the butterfly Koi displays an appearance that is truly unique. This is due to its extremely long and wavy finnage. To some, its long fins may be reminiscent of those of a male Betta fish.

This appearance makes it a favorite to many; but incredibly, formal Koi breeding associations do not favor them. This is due to the fact that normal judging techniques used in Koi shows cannot be applied to the butterfly Koi due its unique fin formations.

Kohaku Koi

The Kohaku Koi is one of the Koi types that is highly prized in its native Japan. This is due to the fact that it is a white bodied fish with red markings. The tone of the red coloration can vary from orange to a crimson red. In Koi competitions, the Kohaku which have red markings as close to the color of the red rising sun of the Japanese flag are rated above all others.

Asagi Koi

The Asagi Koi is not as colorful as some of its other cousins. It possesses bluish to light blue sales on the upper part of its body, with red markings on the belly rising as high as the mid-lateral section. The distinguishing feature of Asagi Koi are the "reticulations" or netted patterns formed by their blue scales. For those focusing on allowing other more colorful Koi types to stand out in their ponds, the Asagi Koi is a great addition. Asagi Koi can be used to add volume to your pond without saturating the observer with too many colors.

Bekko Koi

The Bekko Koi is one of those Koi types that include sub-variations within its own classification. The primary characteristic of the Bekko Koi is that it has black markings over a solid background body coloration. The Shiro Bekko is white with a black pattern; the Aka Bekko is red with a black pattern, while the Ki Bekko is yellow with the black pattern.

In general, all Koi types are docile in temperament and get along well with each other provided that they have enough space. The only time that aggressiveness is displayed is during feeding. Even then, this aggressiveness can be described more as intensity in eating as opposed to aggression against each other.

Regardless of the types of Koi that you select to populate your pond you will have a lovely, resilient and long lasting fish. A properly cared for Koi, of any type, can easily live to an age of 60 years and beyond.

you can buy one for as low as 25-50 pesos each depending on the pattern and class. hey will grow faster in a large pond and be sure to make he water deep in order for them to be able to use their tail muscle causing them to grow faster. feeding them hikari spirulina will also make them grow faster and enhance their color. tetra food is also good.

Do You Have These Essential Koi Supplies For Your Koi Pond?

A Koi pond can be a beautiful addition to your backyard, but it does require a little background knowledge and some important Koi supplies.

A good way to keep the water in your pond oxygenated is through the use of a fountain or waterfall. Not only will they help oxygenate the water but they will also help drown out any undesirable ambient noises, such as street noise.

Your pond will also require a filter to balance the water chemistry. The pond filter will remove harmful pollutants left by the surrounding environment and fish waste. In addition, a pump will be needed to keep water moving in and out of the filter. Keep in mind that neither a waterfall nor fountain will ever replace a pump because they are not strong enough to assist the filter.

There are some Koi pond supplies that are used less frequently but should be kept on-hand for future use. These supplies consist of de-chlorinator, pond salt , baking soda, and a water testing kit. If tap water is being used to fill the pond you will need to use the de-chlorinator to remove the chlorine that is present in tap water. The water testing kit will be needed to help monitor important chemical levels such as nitrates, nitrites and pH. Baking soda and pond salt can be used to regulate chemical levels if they are slightly off balance.

Koi fish can be preyed upon by birds of prey and land animals that live nearby. A deeper pond that is positioned under an overhanging tree can help prevent birds from attacking your Koi. If these precautionary steps do not work or are not available then you can use nets that are designed to stretch over the pond . These nets will also help to keep debris from falling into your pond.

Finally, the right Koi food is very important to help maintain good health for your Koi fish. Pellet food is designed to meet the nutritional needs of your Koi and should be their primary source of food. The pellet food can be supplemented by fruits and vegetables.

Answer by Carrie S
You will have to clean your pond. Cleaning ponds is probably the task that pond owners dread the most, but it is also the most necessary task to keep your pond in its healthiest state. When cleaning ponds, you can do a periodic cleaning of skimming out the debris, but you also need to do a thorough cleaning once a year. This requires a very physical scrubbing of the entire pond. By following the tips suggested here, the process of cleaning ponds will become a little bit easier.

It is best to do your annual cleaning either in the spring or the fall to get the most out of your pond. It is too cold to clean during the winter, and in the summer, your plants and fish should be at their most vibrant and natural best. You don’t want to disturb this equilibrium by cleaning the pond at that time.

When cleaning ponds, you need to remove the fish and plants. To remove the fish and do as little harm as possible to them, take a large container such as a child’s swimming pool or a large, plastic storage container and fill with half pond water and half clean water. Make sure that you add a de-chlorinating tablet to the water. Using a net, catch the fish and gently place them in their new container in a shady spot.

Next, you will want to drain as much water as possible from the pond. Then scrape out the mud and debris that has attached itself to the walls of the pond. The silt and debris from the pond can be placed directly into your garden as it makes a very good fertilizer. Next, you will want to use a scrub brush or sponge to get off the rest of the algae and other materials that cling to the walls. Detergents are not recommended as they might contain toxins that are harmful to your fish and plants. Plain water will work best.

After cleaning the pond, you will want to put back some of the old water into the pond and fill the rest up with new, cleaner water. The old water contains bacteria and nutrients that are necessary for the health of your fish and plants, so you don’t want to throw it all away. Use a de-chlorinating tablet and make sure that the temperature of the water in the pond is the same as the temperature in the plastic containers. This will keep the fish from going into shock when you reintroduce them to the pond.

You can help keep your pond clean during the year by using natural and chemical additives, good filters and pumps, and a periodic cleaning of the debris that floats on the top of the pond. To get the debris off the surface, you can use purchased skimming nets, or old pantyhose and wire hangers will also do the trick. Cleaning ponds still might be the most unpleasant task of having a pond, but with a little help and advice from the experts, you will be able to do it quickly and thoroughly.

Adding a Koi Pond to your Home

One of the newest crazes that are catching on with homeowners is the koi pond. Koi ponds are in ground water gardens that contain koi fish and are deep enough to support life year round even in colder winter climates. Many homeowners are finding it to be a great addition to their front or backyard. The can add great scenery and a tranquil environment for you to relax in.

There are two different ways to add a koi pond to your home. First of all, you could call a landscaping company to add one for you. Many landscaping companies have added this to their list of services due to its popularity. This would be as simple as looking thru the yellow pages and calling landscaping companies to see if they offer this service and see what the prices are. Once their service is completed all you would have to do is add the fish that you choose.

The second way to add a koi pond to your home would be to install it yourself. This way will require a little more patience and dedication. You would first have to start with digging a hole for the pond. It is recommended that the hole is a least 4 feet deep and 4-5 feet wide. Then you would have to install your pond liner. You must install a liner or else you will risk getting debris into your pond from the ground. Then you need to install your filtration system. Flirtation systems can be tricky, so your best bet would be to go into your local pet shop and let them know your needs and dimensions of your pond. Your next step would be to add plants and vegetation to your pond. Types of plants and vegetation you should use depend on the type of climate you live in and can be researched online. Your final step would be to pick out your koi fish and add them to your pond.

Many people do not want this to be the last step in finishing their koi pond but instead add other decorative elements to their pond. These decorative elements can include decorative rocks, sculptures, and decorative redwood bridges which come in many different shapes and varieties. All of these items can be purchased online rather than fishing around at a local store for each item.

Both of these ways are good methods of adding a koi pond to your backyard. You just have to choose which method is best for you. Either way you do it, once your pond is complete it will be there for you to enjoy for years to come.

Colorful Koi

The Japanese have taken a great deal of pride in the careful breeding of Koi Fish to produce the many different fabulous colors and patterns that are available today. Koi fish are loved and treasured by their owners because of the gorgeous colors and patterns available.

Vivid and bright colors shoud mark the Koi Fish. Yellow Koi should be a vivid yellow, and black Koi should be a deep jet black. Dullness of color or spots that are slighly off color are undesirable qualities. Just as white Koi that are not pure white but contain specks of gray. Color is an indicator of the Koi's overall good health. Poor health as well as poor water conditions will cause the Koi to lose color and become dull and drab. Understanding the importance of color and what the colors should be will help a great deal when you are selecting your Koi. It will also help to keep an eye on the color at home as you are raising them to be sure the water conditions and care you are giving them is the best quality possible.

Koi Fish come in a large variety of colors. Some of the most seen Koi colors are red, black, white, green, blue, yellow and cream. Certain terms and descriptions are used by the Japanese to describe the different colors and traits of the Koi Fish, There are a large number of categories that have been identified by Koi breeders. Gosanke is the most popular variety and it includes many sub-categories such as Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki Koi. The Kohaku are white with red patterns. The white on this breed of Koi should be pure white and the red should cover 50 to 70 percent of the body with well defined edges.

The Taisho Sanshoki variety or Taisho Sanke or just Sanke, as they are also known, are white fish with black and red patterns. Again the white coloring should be pure white and the black and red should be bright colors with distinct edges. Like the Sanke category of Koi, the Showa Sanshoki, or just Showa category are white black and red in color as well. The difference is that the main color is black with white and red markings. There are many other varieties that each come in their own color variations. The Ogon come in an assortment of colors but they are all one color. They sould be a solid bright color with no patterns, or markings at all.

You can help keep you Koi's colors bright and distinct by feeding them a rich diet. Shrimp, marigold, plankton and blue-green algae known as Spirulina are some of the things added to commercial grade diets for Koi. These foods are specifically geared to enhance the colors and markings of the Koi. Also, adding foods such as freeze dried brine shrimp and daphnia, you are ultimately feeding them color anhancing foods. Each of these fodds have high concentrations of carotenoids, and carotenoid pigments are the major pigments in the Koi's skin.

What Kind of Koi Pond Supplies Do You Need?

One of the best enhancements to your yard landscape are koi ponds. They are quite a sight to behold and a source of enjoyment for their owners. The musical sound of running water also brings in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. Maintaining and keeping the beauty of a koi pond requires extra dedication.

The owners must commit to doing maintenance that will keep the pond running properly and to make sure that the healthy condition of the koi fish is uncompromised. In other words, the owners of the koi ponds must ensure that essential pond supplies are readily available!

There are different ways of adding more flavor to your pond. Some owners introduce fountains, waterfalls or other forms of water features. This enhances the over-all aesthetics of the pond and at the same time contributes to the health and harmony of the koi fish.

The relative movement of the running water from a waterfall or fountain invariably adds oxygen to the water. But making oxygen available to your koi fish is not the end of the story. You have to maintain the quality of the water in the pond and you can do this by using filters.

These filters function as sanitizers of the water by removing the unwanted pollutants, ensuring a clean and perfect habitat for your koi fish. Also, in most cases, you will have to make use of water pumps. These pumps help in removing pollutants since in a huge pond; filters may not be strong and effective enough in moving the water and totally cleaning it.

There is no doubt that koi fish require clean water. Exposing your koi fish to polluted water will have adverse consequences on its health. It is for the purpose of maintaining the best quality of water that the owner should consider introducing water features to help circulating the water, filters to clean it and a water pump to move the water around enough to clean it thoroughly.

The hobbyist must also exercise caution in adding water to the pond. When its water level recedes, you may have to add water to it. But this however will also add chlorine to the water, to the detriment of your koi fish.

As a remedy, you have to readily apply dechlorinator by adding it to the water. Dechlorinators eliminate harmful and destructive chemicals in tap water. Similarly, the owner must monitor the water's pH and Nitrate levels. He can do this by having a water test kit which he can use in tracking the quality of the water in the pond.

When the test shows that the water's pH or Nitrate level is off, you can put baking soda or even pond salt in the water as a way of regulating it. Finally, building your koi ponds under the shade of a tree is also a good option. Most owners do this since the shade of a tree provides the koi fish a cooler environment and protects them from the harmful effects of too much sun.

The Koi Supplies Essential for Breeding Koi

Koi supplies are numerous and it is important to identify those that your fish need the most. Knowing when to use and how to operate it are vital when taking care of your supplies and to make them work at its maximum.

One of the most colorful and attractive pond fish are Kois. But taking care of them requires a knowledge on proper care and knowing the essential supplies you will need for giving them a comfortable place to live.

One essential Koi supply that will give the fish a more tranquil environment is a fountain. The fountain can provide the pond where the fish live sufficiently apart as it stirs the water and is a good source of blocking the unwanted noise that the fish may find disturbing. Promoting good health for your fish is vital hence using a filter is a necessity to maintain the cleanliness of the water.

Filters promote quality water as it removes pollutant that will prevent common health issues with your Koi fish. Filter supplies always come with a pump which keeps the water moving for a more efficient action of the filter.

Some install waterfalls or fountains on their pond to keep the movement of the water going that assist in the filtering process. It is not advisable however that these will completely replace pumps since their actions are not strong enough to support the filtration process needed to clean up the water.

There are some Koi supplies that are not used on a daily basis but you need to keep them handy as you will need them again. A dechlorinator is used only when trying to replenish the water level of the pond with tap water. It helps eliminate harmful chemicals and keep the newly replaced water clean.

You should keep track of the pH and nitrate levels of the water by using a Koi supply that can test these chemicals on a weekly basis. Test kits are available in most pet supply stores. You should need either a baking soda or salt which you can sprinkle into the pond to help regulate the levels of nitrates and pH after testing the water with low levels of both chemicals.

Koi fish are also prone to become the prey to other predators such as kingfishers, raccoons, Herons, cats and foxes because of their colorful and brilliant colors. One way to avoid this is to create a pond designed to keep predators from wading into the water such as creating deeper pond and placing high overhangs on the pond’s sides to keep predators from reaching the water.

Placing a net is a koi supply used to conveniently keep the water clean from falling debris such as leaves for outdoor ponds. Koi fish need food to live and it is one of the most important Koi supply to keep on hand. Keep different variations of food sources to give your fish a treat. Most kois like to feed from your hand so treat yourself with the pleasure of doing so.

Koi needs special care and giving them the best comfort through the proper koi supplies is worth the effort.

Koi Fish Ponds - Why? Because My Fresh Water Aquarium Just Isn't Doing it For Me

Are you ready to take that next step? Getting bored with your freshwater aquarium? Kinda stuck on what steps to take next?

Wouldn't it be nice to take some of your indoor aquarium fish outdoors, I am sure they would thank you for it. If this is you then you just might be ready to give your fish some exercise and to increase your property's value.

All the things you have already learned that keeps your fish healthy just might make it easier to get started with your own Koi pond or fish pond. So if you are able to take care of any of your fish that might have any fish diseases. You know how to maintain a steady water temperature. Can you handle water changes, testing the water, then you are going to find creating or building your own fish pond easier than most. But even if you are a newbie it doesn't take much to learn fish pond success.

Of Course You Will Need To Do A Bit Of Research

Money is usually a limiting factor so your research will help you understand just how big you can go with your fish pond without draining your bank account.

You know that water will always try to level it's self so you are going to need a pretty level area with access to a water supply. Of course that water supply could come from your garden hose.

No one likes to be over crowded and neither do the fish you will put in your fish pond, so don't try to cram too many into the area you provide. Just remember that your pond is still somewhat like an aquarium and fish need elbow room. It is said that each of your fish will require a minimum of one gallon of fresh water each in order to keep healthy and happy.

Don't do like my son did and put in more than one fighting fish, like the Betta fish, also known as the Siamese fighting fish, as they will seek each other out to fight and that's not a good thing in your fish ponds. I was reading that even if you put a fighting fish, like the Betta into a lake they will find each other and start their own little death match.

You should be sure you read up on how to build fish ponds before you start digging. Do you want a concrete bottom or are you going to use a liner? I personally prefer the less expensive route and pick the liner, plus I can get them in different colours and there is no need to start painting concrete.

Do you want rocks all around it or would you prefer to build your deck around it. What ever you decide it's best to decide before you start the digging process. Which ever method you choose be sure you make the edge of your fish pond safe for those on foot, they may not want to go for a swim if it's not safe.

Think of Your Fish Ponds As Large Aquariums And You Will Do Fine.

Having fish in your fish ponds isn't a whole lot different than having them in your aquarium. You still need to monitor them for health reasons and you still have to maintain the water conditions. Fish can't survive long without a good supply of oxygen so keep the algae level down and your fish will thank you by living long and healthy lives.

JP has been a lover of fish for many years and the idea of building koi ponds was scary to him for a long time until he started reading up on how to create a fish pond. At that point the lights came on JP started his koi pond project and so can you. It just takes a little planning and your koi fish will love you for it. fish ponds

The Importance of Koi Care

Koi fish are by far one of the most popular fresh water fish put into ponds. The Koi are in the waters of thousands upon thousands of ponds around the globe.  Koi fish aren't just desired for their various colors and patterns, it has to do with how long Koi fish can live. I was reading that it has been recorded that one particular Koi lived to the ripe ole age of 226 years old, now that's a long living fish making them great for outdoor ponds.

Carp in Japanese is Koi. Over the years since back in the early 1800 they have been domesticated and breed so that now we have a huge selection of patterns and colours like red, orange, yellow, black, white, silver or even blue or green. It amazes me to think about the patience required because of the fact that their diet and environment affects their colours.

Koi don't really school much but are a friendly bunch and very sociable with other fish. One thing to remember is that Koi will tend to eat smaller fish so it's wise to keep them all about the same size or you might find some get bigger while others get gone.

Koi care must be taken when stocking your koi pond. This is due to the fact that Koi can become large fish. You either have to really pay close attention to the size they grow to so that you are sure you have the right amount of water to maintain the fish at their current size. Some like to keep a smaller pond that say five hundred or so gallons so they will continue to buy small Koi fish and give the bigger ones away.

Koi care includes giving your fish some elbow(fin) room, they will be much healthier and pay attention to the quality of water as it's vital to the health of your Koi fish. Goldfish might be cheap and allow you to fail a little more but Koi tend to be expensive so you won't want to learn to many lessons that hard way.

Note: Koi fish are a cold water fish so they do best in water temperatures that are between 61 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

It may sound scary and dangerous for your Koi fish but because they are an amazing fish they can even thrive in colder water, making them able to remain outside in the winter.  Of course if your Koi pond is too shallow your fish will become frozen fish so be sure your pond is more than 3 feet deep if you plan to leave them outside.

NOTE: As the temperatures begin to drop through the winter months your Koi fish will begin their winter hibernation.  Their digestive systems all but stop for that time.  Take care not to feed your Koi in temps less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit as the food would rott in their gut if they aren't digesting food at that temperature.

I love how relaxing it is to listen to Koi ripple the water when they surface but it's also pretty cool to have a little water fall as part of your Koi pond experience. So remember Koi care is important to learn before you start caring for your Koi fish.

As a Koi Pond enthusiast JP knows that Koi care is vital to healthy and happy Koi but learning this before hand will save you money and stress. Koi Care
