The Essentials To Koi Feeding And Nutrition

Learning the proper discipline for Koi feeding is essential in order to ensure that your Koi fish remain healthy and look their best. The first thing to know in this regard is what can be considered food for Koi.

Koi fish are omnivores; as such they will eat both plant and animal matter. They will eat duckweed, algae and soft aquatic plants. Of course, they will also eat bloodworms, shrimp, earthworm, even tadpoles!

Your role is to ensure that they eat what is best for them in a nutritional sense. The items mentioned above are acceptable provided that you balance their diet. Commercial Koi pellets make for a practical means for delivering a well balanced meal for your Koi. Supplementing this with some other treats, such as lettuce, garlic (which they adore) and oranges is fine; so long as you adhere to certain guidelines.

First, never feed koi any food that has a casing or skin. Corn, cooked beans, even grapes, should be avoided as their digestive system is not geared for digesting such roughage. Intestinal blockages can also occur with Koi. If you feed them earthworms, bloodworms, shrimp, etc., chop them up into small pieces to avoid such maladies.

Knowing what is the appropriate food for Koi is the first step. Second comes knowing how much and when to feed them. The same rule of thumb used for aquarium fish can be applied to Koi. A Koi feeding should only last 5 minutes. Any food that was not eaten within that time frame should be removed immediately from the pond to avoid contaminating the water.

In the summer months when the water temperature is 72 degrees Fahrenheit and above, Koi should be fed 3 to 4 times per day. The food for Koi in this circumstance should consist of a high protein diet. This can be covered with 35% protein Koi pellets.

When the water is above 65 degrees Fahrenheit, but below 72F, the feedings should be decreased to only twice per day and the diet should be low in protein. Low protein pellets are also available for this.

Temperatures between 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit call for feeding frequencies to be curtailed to only once per day with the low protein pellets. Once water temperatures drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit the Koi's metabolism begins to enter a state of dormancy. During this time period koi feeding should be done once every other day.

Please take note of the following: if the water temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, Koi fish must not be fed. At those temperatures they simply will not digest any food that is consumed. If water temperatures remain below 50 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 30 consecutive days, a small feeding, less than a quarter in volume of that of a summer feeding, may be given for one day. This feeding should consist of as little protein as possible. Cheerios are actually perfect food for Koi given this circumstance.

Adhering to the specific types of food for Koi that are permissible and avoiding those which are not, will ensure that your Koi grow large and strong. Ensuring that they are fed according to the seasonal schedule that is best for their own metabolism will make for a koi that not only looks beautiful, but that has a strong immune system.

In short, properly fed Koi are healthy Koi. In turn, healthy Koi are pleasant companions and beautiful centerpieces for any pond.

Feeding Koi Properly

Feeding Koi Properly Depends On The Season
The key to feeding Koi properly is that feeding Koi depends on the season. Actually, to
be more specific, feeding Koi depends on the water temperature.
If you are feeding Koi in heated ponds then they can have a regular, year-round diet. Koi
kept in heated ponds do not have to adjust to changes in water temperature.
Feeding Koi properly during the summer months encourages growth, helps in tissue
maintenance and repair as well as helping lay down fat deposits and providing nutients
that the fish can store for use during the winter months.
When water temperatures are between 64-68 degrees Fahrenheit (18-20 degrees Celcius)
feeding Koi should incorporate a high protein diet that will promote growth. Conversely,
feeding Koi in cooler temperatures involves less protein as it becomes more difficult to
digest then. Instead it is excreted into the water, which not only makes feeding Koi more
protein a bad feeding plan, but also pollutes the pond water.
You need to assess feeding Koi in the cooler months of fall and spring when Koi
appetites are subdued. During this time feeding Koi should involve a change from a high
protein feed to a wheat germ based diet that is easier to digest in the cooler temperatures.
Feeding Koi at temperatures below 46-50 degrees Fahrenheit should stop altogether. In
these water temperatures Koi won't feed at all and will rely on the nutrients that it's
already stored to get it through the winter. This is an important time and you must pay
attention because the food can turn rancid in the Kois digestive system. This can be very
harmful to the Koi and can be easily prevented by paying close attention
when the water temperature drops.
When the weather begins to warm up again and your fish begin seeking out food you can
start feeding Koi the wheat germ based diet again. Then begin feeding Koi by gradually
mixing in the higher protein summer food as the water warms up.
Amounts for feeding Koi depend on their age and body temperature. Feeding Koi fry is
different from feeding Koi adults. When water temperature is around 68 degrees
Fahrenheit Koi up to 1 year old eat 5-10% of their body weight, Koi between 1 and 3
years of age consume 5% of their body weight daily and adult Koi (3 years and older)
consume 2% of their body weight daily.
A good rule of thumb for feeding Koi is to offer as much food as they will eat within 2-3
minutes at each feeding. When feeding Koi you will notice a big surge of activity at the
beginning of each meal, then as they start to get full they will eat more slowly. This is the
point at which you should stop feeding Koi.
As far as the frequency of feeding Koi take note that at temperatures of around 68
degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celcius) feeding Koi should be planned for 2-3 times per
day. Feeding Koi in colder temperatures (50-59 degrees Fahrenheit or 10-15 degrees
Celcius) is only required once per day.

As you can see, it is extremely important to note seasons and temperatures when feeding
Koi!

Food for Koi: Feeding Your Koi

The food you choose for your koi is as important as when you feed your koi. With the winter months fading, we are all eager to get feeding our koi again and see them get active. Please be careful. When the fish are begging for food, feed them, but sparingly. Better to feed six times a day with tiny tidbits than to overfeed -- ever.

One of your most important investments is a water thermometer. A resonably good thermometer costs about  . Check the water temperature. If the water is less than 45 degrees, do not feed at all until the water temp goes over 50 degrees. That being said, let the koi tell you when to feed. If they are hungry and coming to the surface begging, feed them. If not, go away and wait until temperatures get high enough to make the fish become active.

A good quality food will not have corn as the first ingredient. Read labels for fish food as discerningly as you would for your own food. If you have them, earth worms are just wonderful. The koi love them and the worms are about 80% protein and very good for the koi.

Duckweed is an excellent food but be careful about any food, including duckweed, gathered from wild sources. Wild sources are anything outside your control such as lakes, ponds or other water sources over which you have no control.

Citrus is an excellent food. Cut oranges, grapefruit, lemons or limes into 1/2" thick slices. Then cut the slice in half so the meat portion of the citrus is available. The koi will eat the citrus and leave only the rind. Remove the rind and toss it into the compost bin.

Water celery is also enjoyed by koi. Rotate pots of celery for the fish. They will show their appreciation by eagerly eating the celery. Float a few leaves of store celery and lettuce. They like that, too.

The koi will almost anything including meat, bread, pasta or sweets. However, these foods are not good for the koi.

Koi, like us and any other creature, enjoy variety. Different foods provide different needs. Koi will eat a great deal of algae. Summer months bring algae blooms which confound most pond-keepers. The truth is that your koi benefit greatly from algae and they eat a lot of it. In fact, many very high quality foods add spirulena which is a blue-green algae. So if your pond turns green, think about how happy your koi are with so much food at their disposal!!

Insects will fall into the pond and will be quickly gobbled up by the koi. Koi are great natural controllers of mosquito larvae as well. In fact, your fish are the best controllers of algae and mosquito larvae.

Carp (koi) will eat almost anything. It is up to you to control their diet as much as possible to insure that your koi are getting enough calories, but not too much. Like us, fish can become obese. Crazy idea, for sure, but true nonetheless. In fact, I have been in pet stores where their fish were emaciated. So it can happen. Natural foods are the best, of course. I don't know too many carp that will ever hope to dine on brine shrimp but this is a very good food for them and they like it very much. Dehydrated brine shrimp are available at almost every outlet that provides pet food including WalMart, Petco and the like.

In summary, think about what your fish need and whether they are feeding at all with the cold water temperature. Try different foods and monitor the fish activity. If they don't eat something within 24 hours, remove it from the pond or tank. You will probably be surprised at all the stuff they will actually eat and enjoy.

Question by poisonchick12345: what's the best way to take care of koi indoors?
We just bought 3 small (3 inches) koi and have them in a 50 gallon tank for now with 2 bubble stones and the best filter (so we are told)out there for the tank. The fish seem to love it and we are NOT going to add more fish. We added the necessary bacteria for the tank and all seems well. Can anyone give me some advice on raising them? Thanks.

Answer by snoopy
yes well kois would rather like it outdoors in a pond but that doesn't really matter. Kois will get bigger, as you should know {and I'm talking huge!} All you have to do now is feed them, coz you basically have the tank set up good. and you should add some plants in the tank, as these fish love plants, especially banana lillies and the amazon sword. for info go to www.aqualandpetsplus.com and that will show you info about plants, fish./././././

Feeding Time Awareness when Koi Fish are Involved

Whenever, as well as how you can feed koi fish can be the most crucial area in caring for them. If one's objective would be to end up with a koi which grows to its full size and still attain their vibrant colors, one must take care of them with a great deal in the participation regarding the points of other matters prior to just feeding them.

To coax the koi fish in obtaining to their complete size, one should feed them every day and a couple of times a day. This furthermore doesn't signify that you overfeed them; you just need to make sure that they're given the desired intake of fish food around 4 to 5 times during the day.

At this time, you can anticipate the fish to produce a lot of waste, so become certain to obtain the cleanup covered by setting up a quality filter as well as any big biological filter.

If care isn't taken with the ammonia levels, that are generally created because of surplus excreted waste which floats around. The PH levels will rise and will harm the koi. Furthermore, in case you plan to maintain a lot of Koi fish, you'll must get everything big like a big dimension filter, large pond, the right size water pump and the time to maintain this equipment.

You must keep in mind to buy food particularly pertaining to koi fish as well as not generic foods as it might hamper their complete development. They might get fat with which generic foods unfortunately will not attain to the fish highest length. Furthermore, the generic foods doesn't obtain all the nourishing substances that koi's require.

A koi may in addition be provided fruits and vegetables once in 7-10 days pertaining to additional nourishment. Fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruits tend to be cherished from them. Just make certain these are cut into little portions.

Winter is literally the season whenever koi fish don't consume. So one must begin the preparation for the fall. Until which time, the water temperature keeps dropping as much to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the koi would still eat. At this point, you must feed them with the foods that's special, that typically have any large level of wheat germ to strengthen the digestive system of the fish so their body may handle the winter season.

The koi almost hibernates any time the pond reaches the temperature below 50 degrees, so at this point you should not feed the fish. They can be seen floating slowly around the pond. As spring comes and the temp rises to 60 degrees, they're ready to be fed again. Begin feeding them slowly through the days by increasing their intake of foods up to the normal 4 to 5 times each day when the koi starts to react in a positive manner.

Koi's are very adorable fish that can grow up to 3 feet. They are not at all hard to take care of, you may want to keep a few simple things in mind while caring for them. It's truly worth the effort when having one or more of them in your pond.

Koi Feeding - Maintaining a Healthy Diet

How fast to Koi grow? This is a question we hear often. A Koi's grow the rate is dependent on the feeding pattern and several other factors. The key determinates are the water temperature, water quality, number of fish in the pond and the basic genetic background of the fish. Some types just grow faster than others.

For good health and growth Koi need food that has a balanced amount of fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. Sounds just like us. The right diet is key to their good health.

The type of food and the amount to feed them will depend on the size of the Koi. The smaller fish need food in a size they can eat, while the larger fish will do just fine with larger pieces. If you have the usual mix of smaller and larger fish then you will have to make sure there is something for each. Make sure the smaller don't get left out.

To insure proper nutrition I recommend commercial food. This comes in two types. You can choose either a floating food or one that sinks to the bottom. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. The sinking food takes advantage of the Koi's natural bottom feeding characteristic. But with this you'll miss out on watching them eat. This type of food lasts longer because it is formulated to be less effected by cold water.

If you want to watch and enjoy your Koi while they eat, then choose a floating food type. This type of food is steamed cooked to create a shell that dissolves slowing allowing the food to float on the pond's surface for a time before sinking to the bottom. Use this if you want to train your fish to eat from your hand.

The amount of food given at each feeding is important. You don't want to over or under feed your Koi. Remember that the nutritional value of the food is based on the weight of the fish and not the volume of food given. It's recommended that smaller Koi be given about 5% of their body weight, while the larger fish no more than 2% of their weight.

Most Koi will also have live food included in their diet. This should always be considered a supplement and never the main dietary component since they lack the necessary vitamins and amino acids necessary for good health. Koi will eat cockles and worms as well as tadpoles in the spring. The smaller fish will love chironomid and mosquito larva. Daphnia and water fleas are also usually plentiful in a garden pond and good for small Koi fry.

If you want to try bread you can but make sure it is brown bread. White bread contains a mild bleaching agent that is harmful to the fish. Remember never to give Koi fish peas, corn or fish beans since the shells of these can't be digested by the fish. Lettuce leaves, duckweed and other plants found in the pond will be just fine.
