Appreciating Koi Colors

Koi fish are some of the most amazing fish I have ever seen. Their stunning color patterns and the grace with which they swim are just beautiful to watch...These beautiful color combinations must be part of the reason why koi are really treasured and taken care of by their owners.

And their true popularity makes the Japanese people really proud for having started their selective breeding which has resulted in the gorgeous fish traits that we see today.

Koi colors should be true bright colors for the fish to be considered healthy. Also, koi colors range from red, black, orange, green and even blue. While there are different combinations of these colors, a red koi must really be bright red while a black one must really be deep black.

Dull black colors or those with slight gray changes may mean that the fish is not healthy. When the white colors are not extremely white this means they are not exactly in good condition. There is no denying that koi colorations do mirror its health. If they are not in a healthy condition or are exposed to polluted waters, koi will change colors.

What used to be bright will invariably turn dull. Understanding this kind of peculiarity in the koi fish will help you a lot if you buy them from pet shops. This kind of understanding will also serve you in learning how to care for your koi.

Koi fish are available in many varying colors. The most notable colors however are red, yellow, blue white, black, and cream. Having domesticated koi for almost two hundred years, the Japanese coined certain terms to distinguish and describe the colors and characteristics of koi fish.

Breeders have also identified a large number of particular categories. The biggest part of the Gosanke family includes Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki variety of fish.

Kohaku koi are white koi with red markings. The color must be as white as can be; meaning pure white. The red markings should have well marked edges that cover between 50 and 70 percent of the body.

Koi belonging to the Taisho Sanshoki family are also known as Taisho Sanke or Sanke. These are white fish mixed with red and black splotches. Again, the white coloring must be intensely white. And the red and black colors must be deep colorings with well-marked edges.

The Showa Sanshoki, or Showa variety, is similar to the Sanke variety of koi, and are also white, black and red in color. The only difference is that there is a mainly black with red and white markings in the Showa koi.

Different koi varieties have their own distinct color markings. The Ogon koi, for example, come in different colors but are all one color. Distinctively, they should have even hue in their whole body without patterns or markings.

One can enhance koi colors by feeding them a rich food. They can be fed marigold, plankton, shrimp, and blue-green algae called Spirulina. These types of food are also included as part of commercial koi food preparations.

Similarly, feeding koi frozen or freeze-dried foods, e.g. brine shrimp and daphnia, will also enhance their colors since each of these types of foods provide carotene pigments which are the major pigments of the koi's skin.

Koi Colors

It is clear that the Japanese took a lot of pride in selectively breeding koi fish to produce the different gorgeous color patterns we see today. Their spectacular colors and patterns are part of the reason that koi fish are still loved today and are treasured by their owners.

The colors of a koi fish should be bright. A red koi should be bright red and a black koi should be deep black. A dull black or a fish containing scales or spots that are slightly graying does not reflect well on the fish. As would a white koi that is not pure white as snow but contains specks of dirty grey. Color is an indicator of good health.

With koi, if they are in poor health or are exposed to poor water conditions, they will change color. Their bright colors will turn dull. If you are looking to buy koi fish understanding how a koi's color is supposed to look can help you in picking out a health fish. In turn, while caring for koi of your own, keeping a close watch on the color of your koi will determine if you are giving them the best care possible.

Koi fish come in many different colors. Some of the major and most seen colors are red, white, black, yellow, blue and cream. The Japanese used certain terms to describe the colors and traits of koi fish. Koi fish breeders have identified and named a large number of specific categories.

The most popular category is the Gosanke category which includes Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki varieties of koi. The Kohaku koi variety are white with red markings. The white coloring on this breed of koi should be pure snowy white and the red should have well defined edges that cover between 50 and 70 percent of the body.

The Taisho Sanshoki variety of koi which is also known as Taisho Sanke or just Sanke, are white fish with red and black markings. Like most white coloring on koi, the white coloring should be pure snowy white while the red and black colors are deep in hue with distinct edges. Similar to the Sanke variety of koi, the Showa Sanshoki, or just Showa variety of koi are also white, black and red in color.

The difference between the two is that the Showa koi is predominantly black with red and white markings. Other koi varieties all have their own color markings. For instance the Ogon koi breeds come in a variety of colors but are all one color. They should be an even hue all over their body with no patterns or markings.

It is possible to enhance their koi's colors by feeding them a rich diet. Shrimp, marigold, plankton and blue-green algae known as Spirulina are examples of types of food that have been added to commercially prepared foods specifically geared to enhance the color in koi fish. Plus, feeding koi frozen or freeze-dried foods like brine shrimp and daphnia, you are ultimately feeding them color-enhancing ingredients. Each of these types of foods have high concentrations of carotenoid pigments. Carotenoid pigments are the major pigments of the koi's skin.

Understanding Koi Colors!

I always admire the Japanese people for having done a wonderful job of breeding koi fish, producing in the process amazing color patterns and combinations. The sight of koi fish with their breathtaking color patterns is indeed a great source of pride and is part of the reason why koi fish are well loved and treasured by their owners and onlookers as well.

Koi fish should come in bright colors. They may come in red, black or even in white colors. But red koi must be bright red while a black koi must be, in the same vein, deep black. Koi colors reflect the relative state of their health. Colors that have dulled or colors showing scales or spots which have grayed are signs that your koi may not be in perfect health.

Take the case of white-colored koi. When it is not pure white or when it is not as white as snow, it only means one thing—the koi fish is not in good health. This is the case because when koi fish are in poor health conditions or when they are unduly exposed to low quality of water, they expectedly change colors. In other words, what used to be a bright color will turn dull.

Koi color is one of the considerations when you are to buy koi fish. Hence, it is important that you know and understand how these types of fish are supposed to look and look to buy only those whose colors are bright. Understanding this color pattern will also help koi owners monitor and keep close watch on their pet fish.

It is really amazing that these koi fish could come in such various color patterns and combinations. Indeed, their colors do vary. The most common colors that we see among the koi fish are red, yellow, white, black, ivory and even occasionally, shades of blue. These different colors add to the worthiness of the koi as one of the most treasured pets.

Further, these different colors also inspire the Japanese to use varying terms to describe the fish. Breeders have in fact identified and ascertained a good number of categories, the most popular of which is the Gosanke category. This particular and most popular category embraces the Kohaka, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sansoki varieties.

Gosanke Koi

The Kohaku koi variety is known to carry white with red markings. This white color of the Kohaku koi variety must be as white as snow while the red markings are sharply set and cover over half of the koi's total area.

On the other hand, the Taisho Sanshoki variety are also white, black and red.  Mostly distinguished as white fish that have black and red colorations mixed in.

But what distinguishes the Showa koi is that it is mostly black but with white and also red markings.

Similarly, other koi fish varieties have their own color identities. Ogon koi, for example, come in one solid color, although they can come in red, orange, white, black or yellow.  Meaning, the color must be evenly distributed in their body without specific patterns or markings.

Koi color can however be enhanced. You can do this by feeding them the best diet like shrimp, plankton, marigold and seaweed. These types of food are added as ingredients to commercial koi fish diets aimed at bringing out the color of your koi fish.

Feeding them with frozen or dried-types of foods such as shrimp, and foods that contain larger amounts of colors such as anything with orange carotenes, can also lead to improvements in their color.

The Amazing Array of Koi Fish Colors

The very reason that an increasing number of hobbyists breed koi is the variety of colors they are available in. Thanks to Japanese breeders, koi fish color has evolved over the years with an amazing array of color patterns and scaling. Different varieties have been categorized and given specific names according to color patterns.

Kohaku is a common variety of white koi with red or orange markings on the back. This variety belongs to the Gosanke category. Kohaku means ‘red and white' in Japanese, which is where the fish gets its name. Kohaku hi is a white koi that has wide, red markings on its body. Where the red marking is a single pattern it is known as a straight hi. Black koi fish with red and white markings on its body are known as Showa Sanshoku.

There are plenty of koi fish colors for hobbyists to choose from.  Yellow, white, black, blue, orange, and dark green are popular varieties. Constant crossbreeding has resulted in many koi fish colors and varieties being developed. The butterfly kio and ghost koi are some of the recent varieties, although they are not considered as pure koi at a competitive level.

The koi fish color can change according to the food they eat or the prevailing water conditions. The color usually does not reach its peak until the koi grows to a large size. The breathtaking color patterns are a source of pride for every koi fish owner. Koi fish colors are known to reflect the state of their health. Dull colors may be a sign that the koi are not in good health. This may be due undue exposure to low quality water as well.

It is important to understand more about koi fish colors when you buy koi. Their appearance will help you sort out a healthy shoal. You also need to understand their color pattern and keep a close watch on it when you bring them home. Koi fish colors vary, and add to their value as well. Many koi fish have their own color identities. The Ogon koi come in one color which includes black, yellow, red, white, or orange. The koi fish color needs to be evenly distributed over the body without any specific markings or patterns.

Koi fish color can be enhanced by keeping them on a diet of shrimp, seaweed, plankton, and daphnia. These foods contain carotene that brings out the color in the koi. For this, it is important to understand their feeding behavior. Koi are sensitive to dietary and environmental changes, which can change their color drastically. During summer, koi need to be fed twice or thrice a day since the metabolism is at the highest during this season. During winter, they may be fed once a day or not at all since they has metabolism slowed down as they tend to hibernate. Koi are omnivorous and are open to eating a variety of food. You can feed koi fruit since it is a rich source of minerals and vitamins, which will help enhance koi fish color.

To enhance the beauty of your pond, you will most probably look for the most colorful koi. These are ornamental fish in a true sense, which will make you a proud owner. Moreover, koi are considered lucky. However, as a breeder, all you n

Facts About Koi Fish Colors

In the beginning there was the ancient Carp, the Magoi, dark and uninteresting, a vital link of the food chain in China, however destined to be the forerunner of the magnificent "Living Jewels" we enjoy nowadays.

Fast forward to the early 20th century, where the color potential of these fish was discovered by the Japanese, more by accident than by design, and manipulated into the exquisite specimens nowadays recognized as Nishikigoi - literally meaning "Brocaded Koi".

Bred for their artistic splendor, modern day Koi come in a multitude of colors, patterns and varying degrees of brilliance, making them breathtaking additions to the home garden fishpond. Well treasured for their ability to instill calm and inspire a sense of inner peace, Koi are also much loved for their plentiful and diverse personalities. Not being particularly shy, they are normally very happy to be hand fed and will readily rise to the surface to greet you once they settle in.

The always increasing range of Koi colors was once restricted to Red, Black, White, Orange and Yellow, but now includes shades of Indigo, Blue, Grey, Green and Cream.

For a beginner to entirely appreciate Koi, one must begin with a basic awareness of the Japanese nomenclature for describing the traits of color, markings, shape, scalation and brilliance.

This can be a bit over-whelming to start with but it's not long before the method behind the naming becomes easily comprehensible.

Starting with colors, it's always important to note that there are often two or more Japanese words for the same color, simply because one relates to a base skin color and the other to the colored markings on top. For instance, the Japanese word for "Red" can be "Hi" indicating the red markings on top of a different color, or it can be "Aka" meaning the continuous red base skin color. The classification name results from the combination of the appropriate descriptors.

 Vocabulary of Japanese Identification Words:

Ai - Blue or Indigo color

Aigoromo - Blue or indigo colored Goromo Koi

 Interesting Facts About Koi Colors

With "Color" being high on the list of favorite attributes, it is important to examine the quality of a Koi's color when making a selection. Not only is the vibrancy of color an aesthetic choice, more importantly it's an indicator of the Koi's state of health. I the red or orange is anything but brilliant, if the black is dull, or if the white is not "snow" white, then this possibly will indicate poor health. This can be a result of poor diet or poor water quality.

Some varieties of Koi in fact change color as a consequence of temperature changes instead of poor health. Matsukawabake is one such breed.

Koi Color can in fact be improved via dietary supplements. Foods with high concentrations of carotenoid pigments are very beneficial and food supplements such as Spirulina (a green algae), Shrimp, plankton, daphnia and marigold are ideal. Carotene affects the red pigmentation, but if used in excess, can ruin the Koi's colors.

From time to time a Koi's colors may be less than splendid purely because it hasn't yet reached its full potential. Young koi will frequently look a little dull throughout their early development as the initial focus is on the perfection of the body shape and form instead of the improvement of color. At a specific point in their maturity, the colors will start to develop more vibrancy.

Koi colors can also be enhanced by providing good quality living conditions. Waters abundant in green phytoplankton can help develop strong yellow and red colors. Black coloring may be enriched in hard water with a pH level of 7.5-8.5. Take care however - changing the pH and hardness of the water can produce toxic levels of ammonia and nitrite.

Question by FishMan: How many koi and comets can you put in an outdoor pond of about 1500 gallons?
My uncle has a 1500 gallon pond and has 6 comets and 3 koi in it and a bunch of really small fry. Is this overstocked?

I am also planning to give him 1 koi and 2 comets because I don't have enough tank space to keep them in, if it is alright.

Best answer:

Answer by Cherry
Tentatively: No, it is not overstocked, and it can accept those additional fish easily. But please keep reading.

In an aquarium, people tend to consider that 20 gallons minimum and a total ratio of 1 goldfish (common) per 10 gallons is safe. That's assuming 12" to 22" deep. For a pond, it really depends on the depth - deeper ponds will hold fewer fish, since surface area is crucial.

Furthermore, the climate and filtration are important. The warmer the climate (and less shade the pond gets), the fewer fish. In a windy area, more fish can be supported. The less aeration and water movement, the fewer fish. Filter capacity in ponds is also typically not very good unless the person is an enthusiast who built a massive custom oystershell/lava rock/trash can filter, for example.

However, ponds have the advantage of massive algae growth. Algae is somewhat beneficial, since it absorbs waste. Floating plants like water hyacinths are excellent for cleaning ponds (of waste compounds like nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia).

If conditions are ideal - strong filtration, shallow (20" or less), decent water movement (say, 4000 gph), and a cool, windy climate, with lots of floating plants... you could probably stock 50 goldfish with no problems. In a hot, windless area with little shade, no floating plants, no filtration, no bubblers, no forced water movement, and no water changes... I'm not sure. 4 koi and 8 comets might be close to the limit. For koi to goldfish equivalence, I would assume 1" inch of koi is similar to 4" or so of goldfish.

The Incredible Colors Of Koi

When you see the amazing color patterns on koi fish, it's easy to see why the Japanese are so proud of their creative ability to choose and breed Koi fish to produce the mesmerizing Koi combinations. That is one of the major reasons koi fish are still so popular and much loved by their owners and caretakers.

When looking for a koi fish, make sure their colors are bright -- red Koi must be vivid red and black Koi must be colored a dark, jet black. Dull black koi or koi with scales, spots or grey markings are not well-kept fish, just like white koi that are not snowy white but yellowing or spattered with specks of grey.

Vivid colors indicate healthy koi and when they are unwell or living in poor water conditions, koi change color and become dull. When buying koi, it is essential to understand how color reflects the health of a koi and this will help you buy a well-kept fish. Koi fish needs special attention and care.

Keep an eye on the color changes; this will help you ensure that you are giving your koi adequate care.

Koi fish come in a whole range of gorgeous colors, the most popular being red, white, black, blue, yellow and off-white. The Japanese established some explicit terms and phrases to describe the various colors and characteristics of koi fish.

Breeders have also identified and named a number of Koi fish categories used to distinguish the different kinds. The most popular category is the Gosanke category, which contains the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki species of koi.

The Kohaku koi is white with red markings. When buying a Kohaku koi, look for a snowy white color and vivid red markings that have discrete edges. These red markings should cover 50-70% of the koi's entire body.

Taisho Sanshoki koi (popularly known as Taisho Sanke or just Sanke) are white fish with exuberant red and black markings. Similar to the Kohaku, make sure the fish has a snow white body with beautiful dark red and black markings.

Akin to the Sanke koi, the Showa Sanshoki (or just Showa) koi are also white colored fish with black and red markings. Unlike the Sanke, however, the Showa koi have a black body with red and white markings.

Many other varieties of koi are available, each with their distinct color patterns. Consider the Ogon koi, which exist in a range of colors but are composed of one color only. That is, they have no markings and have an even hue. You can even get Komonryu koi with change color with the seasons!

Good news is that you can improve your koi's health – in this case, the color. Feed them with a diet rich in marigold, shrimps, plankton and blue-green algae (Spirulina). These ingredients are commonly added to commercially prepared foods that are produced specifically for enhancing koi colors.

You can also feed your Koi with frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. This diet is rich in high carotenoid pigment concentrations, which are predominant skin pigments in Koi.

The Many Colors Of Koi

The Japanese are known around the world for the selective Koi fish breeding, creating the vivid color patterns we see today. Owing to their amazing range of colors and patterns, Koi fish are popular pet fish and highly valued by their owners.

Koi fish should have bright colors: if you have a red koi, it should be a bright scarlet and black koi should be a deep shiny black. Dull black, scales, spots or gray marks reflect poorly on the fish. A white koi that is not pure white but speckled with grey indicates poor health.

The vivid color of a koi fish is an indicator of good health and if koi are unhealthy or exposed to bad water conditions, their bright colors will become dull. When looking to buy a koi fish, understanding how a koi's color should look will help you pick a healthy fish. When caring for your own koi, carefully examine the koi's color often to make sure you are taking appropriate care of them.

Koi are available in many beautiful colors. Some of the most common colors are red, white, black, yellow, blue and cream. The Japanese used specific words to describe Koi colors and characteristics.

Specialist Koi breeders have identified and named several categories of Koi, the most popular being the Gosanke category. This category includes the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki types of koi.

Kohaku koi are pure white and have red markings along their body. When looking for a Kohaku koi, watch out for a pure snowy white with distinct red markings over 50 to 70 percent of the body.

Taisho Sanshoki koi (also known as Taisho Sanke or just Sanke) are white with red and black markings. When looking to buy a Sanke koi, watch out for a snowy pristine white coloring with deep red and black markings that have distinct edges as this indicates a healthy fish.

The Showa Sanshoki koi (also known as just Showa) are similar to the Sanke variety in that they are also white, red and black. Unlike the Sanke, however, the Showa is mainly black with red and white markings.

The less common koi varieties have their own color markings. For example, the Ogon koi come in a range of different colors but have no markings or patterns; their bodies consist of only one hue. More koi varieties are being developed, with ghost koi and butterfly koi being developed in 1980 and becoming very popular in the UK and USA recently.

You can improve or brighten the color of your koi by feeding them a rich diet including shrimp, marigold, plankton and blue-green algae (known as Spirulina). You can find commercial preparations including all these that are specifically produced to enhance koi coloring.

You can feed your koi frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia to the same effect. All these foods have a high concentration of carotenoid pigments, which are the major pigments in koi skin.

Question by I love my Spoo: Is goldfish and koi care any different?
I'm going to put some fish in my huge pond, and I want to know the proper care for goldfish and koi. I was going to get just goldfish, but I thought I'd look into koi any way. Just to see. Is their care any different from goldfish care?

Best answer:

Answer by Ianab
Not really.

They are closely related and like the same condtions. Koi just get much bigger, but as long as your pond is big enough thats OK. They can live together in a pond as long as the goldfish are large enough to not be eaten.
