Most koi experts agree that there are about 20 major koi varieties in the world. They are basically grouped according to their colors and patterns on their bodies. Koi varieties are named according to Japanese words because the foremost country where koi is bred is Japan. For example, the Kohaku, which is the most popular variety of koi, is white and red. The red is called 'hi' which is Japanese for 'red'. The Gin Matsuba is the plain-colored silver koi variety, whose name 'gin' means 'silver' in Japanese.
Each koi variety has its own distinguishing feature, but there are two that especially stand out.
The first unique koi variety is the black koi. The black koi comes in various sub-varieties such as Kumonryu, Magoi and others. This is a relatively large variety of koi that can grow up to 3 feet in length. A koi is generally regarded as large if it is more than about 32 inches long. The unique feature of the black koi is that it can change its color under certain circumstances. The primary factor that determines its color change is water temperature. During certain seasons when the water attains a certain temperature, the black koi changes its color to white.
The other koi variety that is unique is the butterfly koi. Strictly speaking, the butterfly koi is not one of the koi varieties. You can have butterfly koi which are Kohaku or any other variety. The thing that makes the butterfly koi unique is their long fins and tails, which look like wings that make them seem to 'fly' when swimming. The butterfly koi was produced through the cross-breeding of long-finned carp with koi, first done in Indonesia. It's easy to imagine why the butterfly koi is arguably the most beautiful of all kois.

Question by kittenslayer: Will a koi start growing when it has more room?
I have a koi who is about 5" who has lived in a 10 gallon aquarium for about 5 years. I am planning on putting him into a pond 10x that size; will he grow any bigger when he has more room or is he permanently stunted?

My thoughts ?...probably stunted.
You should see some growth ... but will never reach its full potential.
