Get to Know the Asagi Koi!
Pond owners regard koi as the most important element of their ponds. Through the years, various koi types have captivated the hearts of fish hobbyists. Asagi koi are one the spectacular varieties that can add color to koi ponds.
Many avid breeders seriously believe that the Asagi koi is the finest of all varieties of koi. The blue-colored back and belly are definitely awe-inspiring and tremendously beautiful. Sometimes their fins and gills are covered with blue colorings also. Adding more flavor to its color and to compensate for its blue-colored side lines, they are also often adorned with red markings on the undersides of their bellies.
Their scale patterns can resemble a netting pattern, and this variety of koi is definitively marked in its scales. Each scale is outlined by white edges, making its net-like appearance evem more evident. That's what collectors love about the Asagi koi.
The main color of this koi fish is blue, extending up to its lateral line. Also, their scales will have a marked red coloring from their undersides up to the line on its side. You can also expect this red coloration to extend to their fins, gill covers and the mouth.
Depending on the history of the koi, they can also have a variation of dark-blue or sometimes blue-gray. Some koi breeders will prefer a lighter color of blue which can be found in some of these bloodlines.
Obviously, the red markings in the Asagi Koi provide a beautifully-designed koi appearance. They give the koi fish a well-balanced accent, making it a total package. Also, it can be observed that the blue-colored scales, though lighter on the edges, highlight the koi's fish-net effect. This netting effect can also be seen when the scales are lined together forming a straight row.
It's so easy to appreciate the perfect netting markings, which distinguishes it from among the different koi varieties. These remarkable markings also highlight the amazing patterns on their scales. Hobbyists and collectors always look forward to a better patterning or marking, and a minor change or "imperfection" of the netting pattern will definitely reduce the value of the fish.
There are certain things to consider when choosing a perfect Asagi Koi. The most notable of these include:
Notice of the koi's netting pattern. Younger koi will have lighter colored-netting, although this will grow darker as they grow older.
Also note the indigo blue-type koi fish, since this is considered the perfect color.
Netting patterns must be of even rows of scales. In most cases, you can check on the scales to find patterns on the back which you may not notice.
Buying a young Asagi Koi with grin scales is not advisable. This appearance is retained until the fish gets bigger.
Choose an Asagi with a clear whitish nose is always the best option.
Observe the red coloring of the koi, particularly in the front fins. They have to be all or mostly red or they will grow to become a Motoaka. Their tails can also have some red coloring although they are perfectly fine if they are more clear.
There is another koi category that is similar to a typical Asagi. This koi type is called Shisue. This fish is typically blessed with dark scales found in a row on the top or located at the side lines. Collectors always make sure that these rows are complete before buying shisue. They also consider the scale pattern to ensure that the image of the koi is not distorted.
