What Is The Best Koi Fish Food

For starters Koi are voracious eaters, consuming almost anything that comes their way, so it's up to you as their caretaker to provide your fish with a balanced and nutritious diet.

You have the option of feeding a commercially available food, live insects, or a combination of both these items. In addition you can (and sometimes should) feed occasional treats, fresh foods and nutritional supplements.

Koi fish are omnivores, meaning that they will consume both plant and animal matter, and their prefence runs towards larvae and aquatic insects. Many Koi pond owners either minimize or do not include plant life in their ponds because of their desire to have the Koi themselves be the main focal point. Another reason they leave plants out of the equation is the enthusiasm with which Koi fish devour any edible in sight, often tipping over and destroying aquatic vegetation in the process!

So...if you are one of those who leave the plant life out of your pond you MUST provide your Koi with adequate nutrition. The most common and convenient type of Koi fish food is manufactured dry foods made especially for Koi. They come in many different forms including pellets, granules, tablets, chunks and flakes.

These products are easily stored, relatively inexpensive, easy to feed and contain sufficient nutrients. When deciding which type and size to feed you need to take into consideration the age and size of your fish and even the time of year. The best Koi fish food for the summer months will contain more protein than the foods you feed in the cooler months when your Koi are less active. It should go without saying that you will want to choose smaller size pellets for smaller and younger fish and larger pellets or chunks for larger fish.

Many Koi owners like to use additional supplements to enhance the colors of their fish. In theory this works but take into consideration that the red color pattens in Koi are determined genetically. If the red fades then supplementation will not restore it even though the supplement may contain the raw ingredients necessary for color enhancement. Supplements do improve the overall health of your Koi and do boost their immune systems.

Commercial Koi fish food preparations incorporate some supplementation into their recipes. However new and more effective products have been developed in powder form and can be mixed with your current Koi fish food. Just make sure you do your research and aren't overfeeding any particular supplement as too much of even a good thing can be toxic to your fish! Particularly if you are leaving the vegetation out of your pond you will want to feed your Koi some fresh foods.

Many fresh foods supply vitamins and minerals. Bear in mind that these Koi fish foods are meant to be offered as occasional treats and not included as dietary staples. The following are some fresh foods you can offer your Koi:

* Lettuce: Lettuce is an excellent treat for Koi fish. You can begin serving lettuce by shredding the leaves and letting them float in the pond. After a few weeks you can put in a whole head of lettuce and watch your Koi enjoy tearing off the pieces on their own. I recommend Romaine or Leaf lettuce as these contain more in the way of nutrition than ordinary iceberg lettuce. Once all the leaves have been eaten remove all the remaining pieces from the pond water.

* Oranges: Oranges are another favorite Koi fish food. They are high in Vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant and also helps lower stress levels. These can be served by cutting them into segments and putting them into your pond with the rind intact. The Koi will rip away the flesh, leaving the rind behind. As soon as your fish are done eating make sure you remove any leftover remnants.

* Prawns: Koi consider prawns a delicacy and they are also a good source of protein. Since they are high in protein they should only be fed in the summer months when your fish require a higher protein Koi fish food for extra energy and can digest the protein more efficiently.

* Garlic: Koi adore garlic and will consume almost anything that is covered with it. You can use a coating of garlic to entice your Koi to eat out of your hand. Finally, you should consider adding insects and larvae to your Koi fish food repertoire. If you do decide to offer your Koi insects then mealworms, soft-shelled crickets, bloodworms, blackworms, waxworms and tubifex worms are all suitable.

Feed them sparingly, and don't feed them at all unless you can guarantee they are from a pesticide-free environment. As with prawns it is best to feed these higher protein treats only during the summer months.

Even though there is such a wide selection I hope this article has helped answer the question: "What is the best Koi fish food"?

Feeding Koi Properly

Feeding Koi Properly Depends On The Season
The key to feeding Koi properly is that feeding Koi depends on the season. Actually, to
be more specific, feeding Koi depends on the water temperature.
If you are feeding Koi in heated ponds then they can have a regular, year-round diet. Koi
kept in heated ponds do not have to adjust to changes in water temperature.
Feeding Koi properly during the summer months encourages growth, helps in tissue
maintenance and repair as well as helping lay down fat deposits and providing nutients
that the fish can store for use during the winter months.
When water temperatures are between 64-68 degrees Fahrenheit (18-20 degrees Celcius)
feeding Koi should incorporate a high protein diet that will promote growth. Conversely,
feeding Koi in cooler temperatures involves less protein as it becomes more difficult to
digest then. Instead it is excreted into the water, which not only makes feeding Koi more
protein a bad feeding plan, but also pollutes the pond water.
You need to assess feeding Koi in the cooler months of fall and spring when Koi
appetites are subdued. During this time feeding Koi should involve a change from a high
protein feed to a wheat germ based diet that is easier to digest in the cooler temperatures.
Feeding Koi at temperatures below 46-50 degrees Fahrenheit should stop altogether. In
these water temperatures Koi won't feed at all and will rely on the nutrients that it's
already stored to get it through the winter. This is an important time and you must pay
attention because the food can turn rancid in the Kois digestive system. This can be very
harmful to the Koi and can be easily prevented by paying close attention
when the water temperature drops.
When the weather begins to warm up again and your fish begin seeking out food you can
start feeding Koi the wheat germ based diet again. Then begin feeding Koi by gradually
mixing in the higher protein summer food as the water warms up.
Amounts for feeding Koi depend on their age and body temperature. Feeding Koi fry is
different from feeding Koi adults. When water temperature is around 68 degrees
Fahrenheit Koi up to 1 year old eat 5-10% of their body weight, Koi between 1 and 3
years of age consume 5% of their body weight daily and adult Koi (3 years and older)
consume 2% of their body weight daily.
A good rule of thumb for feeding Koi is to offer as much food as they will eat within 2-3
minutes at each feeding. When feeding Koi you will notice a big surge of activity at the
beginning of each meal, then as they start to get full they will eat more slowly. This is the
point at which you should stop feeding Koi.
As far as the frequency of feeding Koi take note that at temperatures of around 68
degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celcius) feeding Koi should be planned for 2-3 times per
day. Feeding Koi in colder temperatures (50-59 degrees Fahrenheit or 10-15 degrees
Celcius) is only required once per day.

As you can see, it is extremely important to note seasons and temperatures when feeding
Koi!

Understanding Koi Colors!

I always admire the Japanese people for having done a wonderful job of breeding koi fish, producing in the process amazing color patterns and combinations. The sight of koi fish with their breathtaking color patterns is indeed a great source of pride and is part of the reason why koi fish are well loved and treasured by their owners and onlookers as well.

Koi fish should come in bright colors. They may come in red, black or even in white colors. But red koi must be bright red while a black koi must be, in the same vein, deep black. Koi colors reflect the relative state of their health. Colors that have dulled or colors showing scales or spots which have grayed are signs that your koi may not be in perfect health.

Take the case of white-colored koi. When it is not pure white or when it is not as white as snow, it only means one thing—the koi fish is not in good health. This is the case because when koi fish are in poor health conditions or when they are unduly exposed to low quality of water, they expectedly change colors. In other words, what used to be a bright color will turn dull.

Koi color is one of the considerations when you are to buy koi fish. Hence, it is important that you know and understand how these types of fish are supposed to look and look to buy only those whose colors are bright. Understanding this color pattern will also help koi owners monitor and keep close watch on their pet fish.

It is really amazing that these koi fish could come in such various color patterns and combinations. Indeed, their colors do vary. The most common colors that we see among the koi fish are red, yellow, white, black, ivory and even occasionally, shades of blue. These different colors add to the worthiness of the koi as one of the most treasured pets.

Further, these different colors also inspire the Japanese to use varying terms to describe the fish. Breeders have in fact identified and ascertained a good number of categories, the most popular of which is the Gosanke category. This particular and most popular category embraces the Kohaka, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sansoki varieties.

Gosanke Koi

The Kohaku koi variety is known to carry white with red markings. This white color of the Kohaku koi variety must be as white as snow while the red markings are sharply set and cover over half of the koi's total area.

On the other hand, the Taisho Sanshoki variety are also white, black and red.  Mostly distinguished as white fish that have black and red colorations mixed in.

But what distinguishes the Showa koi is that it is mostly black but with white and also red markings.

Similarly, other koi fish varieties have their own color identities. Ogon koi, for example, come in one solid color, although they can come in red, orange, white, black or yellow.  Meaning, the color must be evenly distributed in their body without specific patterns or markings.

Koi color can however be enhanced. You can do this by feeding them the best diet like shrimp, plankton, marigold and seaweed. These types of food are added as ingredients to commercial koi fish diets aimed at bringing out the color of your koi fish.

Feeding them with frozen or dried-types of foods such as shrimp, and foods that contain larger amounts of colors such as anything with orange carotenes, can also lead to improvements in their color.

As a hobby and a business, koi breeding generates enormous profits especially when the koi start to breed. It likewise gives owners the chance of a lifetime to breed a truly remarkable variety of fish.

Nicely-bred koi can command a good price on the market, although their exact value will depend on their health, color patterns and general appearance and peculiarities. Beautiful and healthy koi are those adorned with bright colors.

Today's collectors are very particular when choosing healthy and brightly-colored fish as pets. In fact, serious koi collectors are determined to include amazing varieties in their ponds despite their relatively prohibitive and expensive prices. They have the tendency to walk the extra mile in search of the better and more expensive fish.

These enthusiasts also want to breed various koi types in order to produce unique koi fish. Some creative collectors go to the internet and various websites to hunt for interesting and one-of-a-kind koi which are put on auction or sale.

Expensive types of koi are always produced with beautiful colors. They are bred from quality varieties. There is no question that a quality breeder always produces amazingly irreplaceable types of koi fish. And it is also a fact that better male and female breeders are highly-priced due to their ability to produce more fry with attractive and stunning color patterns. Those which continue to breed a good number of fry are thus considered good breeders.

Koi breeders and sellers, in certain cases, offer to sell highly-priced koi. Most of them own pet shops while others put their koi on sale or auction at various internet sites. This way, koi collection and breeding is no longer a hobby but a business as well.

Those who plan to buy expensive koi should always consider finding good quality. Buyers who understand and can identify the best variety of expensive koi will know that the fish they are buying are worth the price. They must be aware that there a number of sellers who will try to take advantage of their lack of understanding in koi fish.

Hence, they must exercise caution in buying expensive koi. In this kind of business, ignorance comes with a stiff price. Buyers can purchase koi with a high price but low return because it turns out that the fish is not what it's supposed to be. Investing in koi can be pricey but the rewards are worth it. Unique koi can really be costly. Buyers must be aware of the various types in order to avoid buying inferior fish. Koi fish collection or breeding can be a lot of work but the dividends are astonishingly high.

Quality koi are undoubtedly expensive due to their elegance and unparalleled beauty; hence, proper knowledge of the various varieties will be a lot of help. Owners need to educate themselves on how to properly manage and feed their koi. They should learn the art of proper fish maintenance in order to safeguard their investments and enjoy the benefits and advantages of having koi in their pond.

Tere Bina Zindagi Se Koi Shikwa Nahi Kishore & Lata - Aandhi Brought to you by: Azgar Khan

Koi - Japanese Fish of Love

The carp that travelled to Japan from China, gained tremendously in colour and beauty: thanks to the Japanese breeders! And it is this ‘Brocaded carp' that the world knows as Koi today. Literally ‘Koi' means ‘carp' (both common and ornamental species) in Japanese. The ornamental domesticated fish that we know as Koi is actually ‘nishikigoi' in Japanese. Whatever the history and linguistics facts be, for us Koi is the beautiful, colourful, adaptable, domesticated pond fish.

Before we start talking in detail about the Koi fish keeping, let's first look at some of the interesting benefits of having a Koi pond or say having a Koi in your pond (Koi co-exists well with other fish. So you can keep it with the ones you already have).

**  It will add a spectrum of beauty to your garden environment.
You will be able to establish a special bond with your Koi. They will feed from your hand once they gain confidence in you. Needless to say, this is the ultimate that one can expect from a pet. And a ‘rare ultimate' when it comes to fish.

**  If you are (or will be) a breeder, a Koi means thousands!
Believe in Feng Shui? Koi is believed to bring good luck.
Some symbolism…? Koi is considered to be a symbol of love and friendship in Japan.

**  Koi is ‘elite'. Yes… keeping Koi is a status symbol; your garden's style statement.

Some other benefits that do not have any scientific evidence but have been talked about by Koi owners are:
*  A Koi pond adds value to your property. If you are looking to sell yours, adding a Koi pond might increase the rates and the possibility of selling quickly.
*  Spending some time by a Koi pond has been reported to be a great stress reliever.

If you are venturing into the Koi hobby, it is worth noting that rearing Koi is not like having any other simple ornamental fish in an aquarium or a fish tank. Even if you do not want to be a breeder and are interested in keeping Koi solely for ornamental purpose, some research and preparation is a must. You will need a pond with proper size and systems in place. Seasonal changes would require some adjustments in order to keep Koi healthy. For example, feeding Koi requires to be ‘almost stopped' in peak winters. All these aspects need to be taken care of and a fair degree of expertise is required at every step from selecting your Koi to creating Koi specific conditions.

Also, Koi is an expensive affair. The fish itself will cost you some handsome bucks. And you can't keep one. You will have to have a group of at least three of them; as experts recommend. You will also have to spend on building a pond or enlarging an existing one to suit the needs of Koi. Also, you will need to install proper purification systems and pumps, which is again a fairly big investment.

Another important aspect to be considered is the safety of your Koi. This fish being extremely attractive is an easy attention seeker for the aerial predators. So you will need to grow trees in order to block their vision. Also, the depth of the pond will need to be increased not only as required by Koi but also as a safe guard against cranes and other such hunters, if they are a problem in your area. You might also need to use nets over the pond.

Worried? Oh you shouldn't. Efforts are going to be huge, but the result will be more so. After all you can't have the roses' bloom without the thorns!
