The traditional ideal body shape of Koi is oval but the Butterfly Koi is much slender. The long slender fins also compromised traditional Koi standards. In Japan these fish have been disallowed from Koi competitions. As a result of all this Koi breeders and retailers do not include this breed in their range of Koi.

However despite all this in America the breed is extremely popular and there is no argument over whether or not the breed is part of the world of Koi. The Koi Club Association of America has set up its own standards and criteria for judging these beautiful fish. However even these standards are in the process of development and there are many who feel that the criteria for judging traditional Koi should not be lost sight of in judging Butterfly Koi. There is still tension between the purists who favor the shorter fins while the market for the long tail is far more
dominant.

Butterfly Koi were bred in the USA by the Blue Ridge Fish Hatchery. They were first named by Wyatt LeFever of this hatchery. These popular fish  are sometimes also refered to as Dragon Koi. One of their advantages is that they look as beautiful when viewed from above as they do from the side which makes them excellent pond fish. They appear to swim with grace and have such a regal bearing that their presence is a huge visual asset to any Koi pond. Ongoing breeding programs are producing fish with color equal to the more traditional range of Koi. They are a hardy fish thriving in a wider range of temperatures and very resistant to disease. They have a reputation for destroying plant life within a pond but if
the right plants are chosen both are able to thrive in the same pond.

Butterfly Koi like regular Koi do not do well in an aquarium. They can grow to become large fish. You should not consider keeping Butterfly Koi unless you have a pond holding at least a thousand gallons or more. All the criteria required for keeping Koi apply equally to these fish. Butterfly Koi are ravenous eaters and grow very quickly and need room to do so.

Size, of course, is an issue with fully grown Koi ranging from 2 to even 3 feet in length. Water depth should never be below 3 feet in order to maintain sufficient swimming space and temperature consistency for all Koi types.

Butterfly Koi

Of all Koi types, the butterfly Koi displays an appearance that is truly unique. This is due to its extremely long and wavy finnage. To some, its long fins may be reminiscent of those of a male Betta fish.

Kohaku Koi

The Kohaku Koi is one of the Koi types that is highly prized in its native Japan. This is due to the fact that it is a white bodied fish with red markings. The tone of the red coloration can vary from orange to a crimson red. In Koi competitions, the Kohaku which have red markings as close to the color of the red rising sun of the Japanese flag are rated above all others.

Asagi Koi

The Asagi Koi is not as colorful as some of its other cousins. It possesses bluish to light blue sales on the upper part of its body, with red markings on the belly rising as high as the mid-lateral section. The distinguishing feature of Asagi Koi are the "reticulations" or netted patterns formed by their blue scales. For those focusing on allowing other more colorful Koi types to stand out in their ponds, the Asagi Koi is a great addition. Asagi Koi can be used to add volume to your pond without saturating the observer with too many colors.

Bekko Koi

The Bekko Koi is one of those Koi types that include sub-variations within its own classification. The primary characteristic of the Bekko Koi is that it has black markings over a solid background body coloration. The Shiro Bekko is white with a black pattern; the Aka Bekko is red with a black pattern, while the Ki Bekko is yellow with the black pattern.

In general, all Koi types are docile in temperament and get along well with each other provided that they have enough space. The only time that aggressiveness is displayed is during feeding. Here are some guidelines to choose the best possible quality supplies for your pond – including the fish, fish food and pond equipment.
 
The Koi for you;
°  General Health – Ensure that the fish is healthy. A healthy fish would be agile and swimming swiftly but gracefully. Its movements should not be haphazard or frantic. It will not be gasping for air. There should be no spots or unhealthy dullness on the skin.
°  Body shape – The shape should appear proportionate, balanced and full at the first glance. No part of the body – fins, tail, head – should be over or undersized. Females have fuller bodies compared to males.
°  Colour – Very defined or bright colours are not desirable in young Koi. It might develop into an undesirable pattern as the fish grows. Look for healthy but emerging tones.

Fish food:
*  Ingredients – Food with high ash content is not good for Koi. Choose a food which is high in protein. Carefully read the constituents details given on the pack.
*  Whole fish meal – This is a good and healthy option to choose. It is made of crushed whole fish and has almost all the elements that the Koi require. This is different from white fish meal which is made up of fish left overs. So be careful.

Food for Koi: Feeding Your Koi

The food you choose for your koi is as important as when you feed your koi. With the winter months fading, we are all eager to get feeding our koi again and see them get active. Please be careful. When the fish are begging for food, feed them, but sparingly. Better to feed six times a day with tiny tidbits than to overfeed -- ever.

One of your most important investments is a water thermometer. A resonably good thermometer costs about  . Check the water temperature. If the water is less than 45 degrees, do not feed at all until the water temp goes over 50 degrees. That being said, let the koi tell you when to feed. If they are hungry and coming to the surface begging, feed them. If not, go away and wait until temperatures get high enough to make the fish become active.

A good quality food will not have corn as the first ingredient. Read labels for fish food as discerningly as you would for your own food. If you have them, earth worms are just wonderful. The koi love them and the worms are about 80% protein and very good for the koi.

Duckweed is an excellent food but be careful about any food, including duckweed, gathered from wild sources. Wild sources are anything outside your control such as lakes, ponds or other water sources over which you have no control.

Citrus is an excellent food. Cut oranges, grapefruit, lemons or limes into 1/2" thick slices. Then cut the slice in half so the meat portion of the citrus is available. The koi will eat the citrus and leave only the rind. Remove the rind and toss it into the compost bin.

Water celery is also enjoyed by koi. Rotate pots of celery for the fish. They will show their appreciation by eagerly eating the celery. Float a few leaves of store celery and lettuce. They like that, too.

The koi will almost anything including meat, bread, pasta or sweets.However, these foods are not good for the koi.

Koi, like us and any other creature, enjoy variety. Different foods provide different needs. Koi will eat a great deal of algae. Summer months bring algae blooms which confound most pond-keepers. The truth is that your koi benefit greatly from algae and they eat a lot of it. In fact, many very high quality foods add spirulena which is a blue-green algae. So if your pond turns green, think about how happy your koi are with so much food at their disposal!!

Insects will fall into the pond and will be quickly gobbled up by the koi. Koi are great natural controllers of mosquito larvae as well. In fact, your fish are the best controllers of algae and mosquito larvae.

Carp (koi) will eat almost anything. It is up to you to control their diet as much as possible to insure that your koi are getting enough calories, but not too much. Like us, fish can become obese. Crazy idea, for sure, but true nonetheless. In fact, I have been in pet stores where their fish were emaciated. So it can happen. Natural foods are the best, of course. I don't know too many carp that will ever hope to dine on brine shrimp but this is a very good food for them and they like it very much. Dehydrated brine shrimp are available at almost every outlet that provides pet food including WalMart, Petco and the like.

In summary, think about what your fish need and whether they are feeding at all with the cold water temperature. Try different foods and monitor the fish activity. If they don't eat something within 24 hours, remove it from the pond or tank. You will probably be surprised at all the stuff they will actually eat and enjoy.

Question by poisonchick12345: what's the best way to take care of koi indoors?
We just bought 3 small (3 inches) koi and have them in a 50 gallon tank for now with 2 bubble stones and the best filter (so we are told)out there for the tank. The fish seem to love it and we are NOT going to add more fish. We added the necessary bacteria for the tank and all seems well. Can anyone give me some advice on raising them? Thanks.

yes well kois would rather like it outdoors in a pond but that doesn't really matter. Kois will get bigger, as you should know {and I'm talking huge!} All you have to do now is feed them, coz you basically have the tank set up good. and you should add some plants in the tank, as these fish love plants, especially banana lillies and the amazon sword. for info go to www.aqualandpetsplus.com and that will show you info about plants, fish./././././

It will also help to keep an eye on the color at home as you are raising them to be sure the water conditions and care you are giving them is the best quality possible.

Koi Fish come in a large variety of colors. Some of the most seen Koi colors are red, black, white, green, blue, yellow and cream. Certain terms and descriptions are used by the Japanese to describe the different colors and traits of the Koi Fish, There are a large number of categories that have been identified by Koi breeders. Gosanke is the most popular variety and it includes many sub-categories such as Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki Koi. The Kohaku are white with red patterns. The white on this breed of Koi should be pure white and the red should cover 50 to 70 percent of the body with well defined edges.

The Taisho Sanshoki variety or Taisho Sanke or just Sanke, as they are also known, are white fish with black and red patterns. Again the white coloring should be pure white and the black and red should be bright colors with distinct edges. Like the Sanke category of Koi, the Showa Sanshoki, or just Showa category are white black and red in color as well. The difference is that the main color is black with white and red markings. There are many other varieties that each come in their own color variations. The Ogon come in an assortment of colors but they are all one color. They sould be a solid bright color with no patterns, or markings at all.

You can help keep you Koi's colors bright and distinct by feeding them a rich diet. Shrimp, marigold, plankton and blue-green algae known as Spirulina are some of the things added to commercial grade diets for Koi. These foods are specifically geared to enhance the colors and markings of the Koi. Also, adding foods such as freeze dried brine shrimp and daphnia, you are ultimately feeding them color anhancing foods. Each of these fodds have high concentrations of carotenoids, and carotenoid pigments are the major pigments in the Koi's skin.

have a good sized filtered pond, large enough for a koi to grow to it's full length, and deep enough to hibernate and protected from the local wildlife! (grids and such). and keep your water in good condition, yes even ponds need water changes, just not as often as tanks.

koi will NOT thrive in a tank environment, unless it's a really really really big tank, that's the size of a pond!
